    yet another Victor Jara stunner

    I wish there was footage of him performing in Moscow this year @Snowboy

    Apparently;

    "He was so successful that the Soviet Union claimed in their media that his vocal prowess was the result of surgery he had undergone while in Moscow"

    yeah Long John Silver is pretty good. mainly cuz of the goated Kaukonen and Casady duo which isnt a big surprise

    Kaukonen really letting loose, feels a bit more like their live sound sometimes

    funny cause I listened earlier and was thinking how much Grace's songs elevate the project lol. Aerie and Easter are incredible but Jorma and Jack came through too.

    now do these;

    i might be the rare Airplane fan who doesn't really worship Grace. i just like her, don't really love her. just a very good singer who was definitely the best in the band with a few amazing highlights for me.

    whereas Kaukonen and Casady are in the absolute elite tier of psych guitarist/bassist (and by extension elite for the field of rock in general). rhythm guitar/drums solid too. really one of the first truly great instrumental combos in the mature rock era if you think about it especially for American bands

    I know you're stopping yourself from saying they outrank McGuinn/Hillman and rival Garcia/Lesh but The Byrds paved the way so don't even literally think about shading them but yeah I agree otherwise. Grace just sounded like such a cool badass babe and I love how she developed her craft.

    McGuinn and Hillman didnt even cross my mind, doing totally different things. especially no disrespect to Hillman but hes still a pop rock kind of bassist where Casady was clearly more in the realm of a Jack Bruce or Entwistle type "lead bassist"

    Casady was definitely Lesh's OG too i think he said as much in his autobiography. (he was still new to the instrument anyway in like 1967). dont think Dead caught up to Airplane until 1969. maybe 1968's highlights but they were still much rougher around the edges

    Byrds obviously the main og's of american rock basically but I think in terms of the instrumental format itself the late 60s-70s was more in the vein of the Airplane or Cream types. and that aspect of Byrds influenced didnt get picked up as heavy again til the 80s had the alternative rem/smith types arise to oppose the Cream/Zep descendants in the mainstream
