    don't forget The Replacements @twinkletoez

The opening track Strutter from that album is also hard to deny. I first heard it in one of the GTA games.

The last opus of bubblegum. That classical bridge section at 3:05 is so good.

A lot of nostalgic 70’s music tends to be a 50’s thing, but this is just an overt Beach Boys tribute.

  • Fella

I thought about posting this one. Sounds almost grunge in a way.

    s***, it kinda does

hard/glam rockers Sweet drop an early heavy metal classic

i think people stretch things a bit to call early 70s hard rock "metal" sometimes. but this one is absolutely in the same vein as what a Saxon or Priest or somebody would be doing towards the end of the decade. especially the part where the solo kicks in

take away the harmonies, make the vocals a bit more aggressive and change their look and its pure metal. that glam rock -> 80s metal lineage is super important

I wanted to like them more, but only really cared for the big singles from that record. Fox on the Run and Six Teens I mean. I’ve never liked Ballroom Blitz.

    another classic Garcia ballad

this one always hits especially hard when they bust it out at the end of some gnarly jam sequence

  • Feb 3

what Nico does when she gets to the "mother, I want to f*** you" part

her earlier stuff was incredibly heavy too obv but with the addition of Eno's ominous noodling and Phil Manzanera's slashing guitar to her and Cale's sound, that moment really feels like dawn of goth rock @RASIE @twinkletoez

you should peep The Grateful Dead Movie for 1974

finally came out a few years later after delays but it depicts 1974. has some top tier footage of the great last run of concerts before their hiatus and cool documentation of the general phenomenon

    fine then

also instead of a highlights playlist for this year I strongly recommend you try to marinate on D***'s Picks Volume 12. might be one of the best releases in the band's history since it basically just takes the best half of 2 peak shows into 1 release

this is absolutely highest tier of Dead

also annoyingly looks like the grateful dead movie soundtrack stuff isnt on spotify but also recommend peeping as much of the footage as you can handle. widely considered a peak run and the best documented shows at this point. crazy how even shows 4 months apart can sound so different with them, because this isnt quite the same sound as the summer 1974 stuff anymore

'74 is a strong contender for their peak

It's kind of the conclusion of everything theyd done up to that point. really one of the deepest years since the level of improvisation is at an all time high. every band member is at their arguable peak. also the last hurrah of the one-drummer era as Mickey Hart permanently joins again during the last show before hiatus.

big part of the mythos is the groundbreaking legendary Wall of Sound sound system developed by the LSD kingpin and soundman Owsley Bear Stanley. a ridiculous endeavor but most heads who attended shows in 1974 swore the sound quality was mindblowing

They finally took a nearly 2year break due to overwhelming financial situation, d*** use, burnout from almost a decade of touring, feeling like theyd finally reached a wall creatively in a way. They had some peak years and the popularity only increased after hiatus but most older heads said that the magic of the scene was never quite the same after the hiatus

Garcia barely took any break though, 1974 he had a alright covers album and some good live stuff even though "Jerry Garcia Band" wasnt in full swing yet

That album in general is probably my favorite I’ve heard from them so far. I was going to post that one, Don’t Leave Me Alone With Her, and Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth.

Also have you heard that song Beach Baby I posted earlier? think it’s pretty stellar pop song writing, but it’s worth it for that classical influenced bridge section.
