I've loved Sketches of Spain for decades I'm just super picky and prefer prefer stuff with unique instrumentation and not too much relentlessly squalling free jazz horns.
Like I don't know what to make of John Coltrane but Alice can floor me.
Bruuuh, I just heard my first John Coltrane album and cannot agree with you there.
A Love Supreme, Pt. III - Pursuance. That double bass solo at the end after the f***ing battlefield of instrumentation prior. S*** was mesmerizing. Immediately became one of my favorite songs and ofc the album in general is one of my favorites now. I'm getting into jazz these days actually and so far Coltrane is my GOAT.
Seems like jazz peaked in the 60s so far, hmm. John Coltrane, Simone, Davis, Mingus etc. I just know I'm excited to keep checking stuff out.

I've had some potent listens to Psalm but otherwise it's too much for me. I think I feel that same way about the guitar excursions of Crazy Horse that you do about that "battlefield of instrumentation".
I missed the part where it said UPDATED Jan 23 and thought that was when the thread started lmaooooo
We actually started this in 2018 on the old site been at it for a while now
How did we lose a year in 2019? @RVI @Fella @twinkletoez did 4 pages back in 2018 on ktt1 and restarted on ktt2 in 2020 but I don't remember taking a year off.
It's so much harder to judge what jazz is good or not good even harder to rank it with pop
And I'm just too big of a fan of voices and words
We’re pretty lined up in terms of what we like lol. There’s obvious divergences, but it’s nice that I can usually rely on your recs.
Oh and by the way, I watched The Cranes Are Flying a few days ago. Loved it.

idk tbh i dont remember that little thread on the old site
Do you use the term doo-wop broadly and include guys like The Drifters, Miracles and Impressions?
Yes, no and no. The last two are pivotal for when doo wop turned into soul. Drifters too but they were around much earlier

Early early Drifters for sure was doo-wop but by the time Ben E. King joined I would call them r&b.
Same with Miracles and Temptations except later Temps like I Wish It Would Rain which is pure soul. Also most James Brown until '65.
You dont use "r&b"?

R&B is a very general genre term. People use it for everything from Ray Charles to Usher. I try to be specific (funk, soul, new jack swing) but if I can’t I just say R&B. Same for rock.

yeah we are other than my aversion to emo pop punk stuff
knew you'd like Cranes
better put that directors Letter Never Sent and Soy Cuba on your watchlist too cause they're also stunning. LNS has Tatyana Samoylova in it again and man she is one of the most beautiful actresses of all time

yeah I just started using "soul" super broadly to categorize things on my iTunes. gets too difficult when one artist has a funk bop, r&b scorcher and deep soul tune on the same album like Sly and George did all the time.
also use "rock and roll" to cover pretty well everything that isn't made with pure synthesizers, pure acoustic guitar or that has steel guitar on every song.
you were there, man
yeah for a whole 4 pages

does itunes let you tag multiple genres at once?
a lot of the times i end up putting multiple relevant ones on there. like pretty sure i got almost every prince album tagged as Funk/Pop Rock/Contemporary R&B/Pop Soul and maybe more occasionally
yeah for a whole 4 pages
Spent almost ten months just waffling about on 1956 definitely wasn't taking it seriously yet

Honestly I barely like that stuff to begin with. Most of what I like in that sound is closer to just indie and alternative rock.
But yeah I’ll definitely get around to more of his work. You still gotta check out Ballad of a Solider for me tho.

Not bad
kinda expected it to be a little more artful like Cranes/Ivan's Childhood but it was a nice yarn

I think it’s just as artful, but the focus lies elsewhere. It’s more centered on the fleetingness of romance. That whole sequence on the train is astonishing to me. Cranes and Ivan’s Childhood have much broader concerns.

The finale montage was beautiful
