I hate this talking point so much. The fact that a lot of black people in these two sectors have said this too. I understand the point. but it is clearly just another way to put black people down and guilt trip them.

People are really surprised that lots of black people have been pursuing these careers when historically a lot of other careers have been closed off to us. Even today, some recruiters expose their other recruiters of being racist and not trying to give opportunities to black people. So, why should we stop pursuing areas that many of us excel in?

Until black people in poorer areas have better schools that can actually support children to pursue more then people have no place telling us what we should and shouldn’t pursue.

is anyone actually complaining about this? sports is a meritocracy so that's just a given but as far as entertainment yeah I could how other races feel underrepresented but that's not because of Black people lol

Yeah, I forgot who was the last black celeb to say it but they were talking about how in their community they were the only black family and everyone else around them were doctors etc

And then people were agreeing. “Black people need to focus elsewhere”.

It is. Don’t know how people have managed to see it as a legitimate talking point.

there's like a s*** load of nuanced conversations that go into this conversation like the education system in general but it's just such a specific anecdote from them it's like

while what you said was true, there’s another problem in our community in that we put these entertainers and athletes on a pedestal over actual activists when they speak out politically, and that s*** has to stop too.

  • Nov 19, 2020

Most of our heroes succeeded in these areas and gained acceptance in society. When a white person looks outside they see so many role models in different fields of society even if their immediate family is worse off. For us not so much historically so I agree OP it's not a fair criticism

We are a strong and resourceful ppl so we still find success in other areas but yes theres a reason we are overally represented in these fields.

    These are some
Of the only industries where we thrive and dominate.

They'll always find a way to try & bring us down regardless of what we do so it don't matter to me get the bag however you can i'm always happy whenever i see another successful black person

  • Nov 19, 2020

    Yes tbh especially today

More and more black people are going into specialised fields the only problem is a lot of them still have prejudices

Silicon Valley is one where it’s still a bit hard for black programmers
