i love how much Tribe i can hear on Do the Right Thing

yea we’ve tried making tribe inspired songs on every single album

on puppies we really wanted to do a song like Find Your Way but its so hard for us to do because their s*** was so f***ing simple in sound yet amazing and technical so when we tried to emulate their sound it’d come off too stripped back then we’d add s*** and there’d be too much going on in it. Also very easy to sound corny tryna make a 90s inspired song

But for this one we knew we had to have a tribe inspired song if we wanted to do a tape inspired by NY Culture. So when we got to the studio Deiondre used the stand up bass that was taller than him to play the bassline and that really brought the sound we were chasing, then jack played the drums and deiondre added the piano and strings and it was the song.

Really glad that you f*** with it man

my first impression of this is great, i will have more thoughts later when i listen more. i think it sounds more polished than the draft i heard but in a very good way, it still retains the loose feeling and is constantly engaging without feeling sloppy at all. i get reminded of other artists in small doses as i listen but never in a way that just makes me want to listen to them instead. really good synth sounds all around that i think captures the entire aesthetic well

initial favorite is peach cobbler maybe

    thank u so much fr

im very glad u feel that way, what u described is an exact goal

@Mitchell you ever listened to George Clanton? i was getting reminded of him with the keyboard/synth sounds and some of the hooks especially on peach cobbler

one of my favorite albums of the 2010s which has a really special feeling to me so its a great thing to be reminded of

broooo yes i f***ing love george and this album, the whole band listens to him a lot especially when this came out

peach cobbler is one of my fav instrumentals on the album, that was the hardest song to write for some reason because its so simple lyrically but we were just having a hard time getting the message we wanted across without being too wordy

so we were in NY tryna polish the song up and see how to make it better because the hook has like 5 synths at once and me and deiondre were tryna figure what synth to keep and this guy mikey freedom heart who is in blood orange was in the studio listening to it giving us advice and stuff, and he told us to keep all the synths because it feels like a wave and told us some tips about how to mix them all together and i really feel like his advice made the song better so im really grateful for him

definitely my favorite BSK project so far but i should probably revisit the other ones now too

my ranking of them is this

1.cyberkiss*-its our most realized, best transitions, best mixed i feel like those are objective. then imo it has our most balanced writing as far as mature and fun, and strongest most colorful production

2.whatever, man-i think these are some of the catchiest songs like friendship, frankie, britney. its the most tight and concise while also still being diverse sorta. feel like the hooks on this album are really strong and we just executed the concept well

3.surf-i feel like this has an element of rawness and naturalness we’ll never be able to capture again which is why people gravitate towards it the most, and i think it has some of our most creative song ideas and was when we really figured out how to make a good song, but i definitely think our vocal takes weren’t very energetic yet on some songs, and the production isn’t as colorful because we had way worse equipment on this than on everything after but this album changed our live and also really embodies what the kc underground sound felt like in the late 2010s

4.puppies forever-i like this one but my ideas during this era just weren’t as strong and i was really depressed and drinking a lot during this one so i wasn’t able to focus in how i normally would. everything is like almost how i wanted it but slightly off. i feel like the mix didn’t compliment the sound we were going for at all, we wanted a big bold raw album like in utero and it just didnt get engineered or mixed that way. but im glad we made it because i learned a lot from it, and its great live and i really like pals, fight club, jimmy, and piss drunk still.

5.lets play sports-we were honestly just f***ing around on this and i didnt even think bsk would be anything more than a side project for fun. i kinda wish surf was our first project but i wouldnt wanna erase any of our history, still some cool colorful ideas here but we didnt know how to write to beats like this so all the writing on here is mush pretty much except some hooks, and the vocal performances on this are so boring especially mine

i was still in high school when we made lets play sports and we hadn’t even started hanging out downtown in our city which inspired surf just like going to ny inspired cyberkiss* So its kinda cool hearing us before we had really experienced anything besides our lil part of the city

musically it definitely isn’t anything thats gonna impress you but i definitely think you hear all the stuff that led to us doing what we’re doing now on it. Bugs was like the first song we made that i was like okay this is pretty good, thats probably my favorite one, also one tab is cool. But yeah a lot of it is sorta whatever musically. The rock songs on it were the last addition because I discovered weezer and wanted to do rock s***, but before that we literally had a no guitar policy it was supposed to be all dance and rnb inspired music basically but hearing weezer changed everything then

valid and pretty much the same as mine tho whatever, man and surf are pretty interchangeable for me pretty much the reasons you listed. Whatever, Man is the better overall album imo with higher level production and most concise tracklist of the whole bsk discog so far but the vibes on surf are unmatched in rawness and sincerity.
