Is it the biggest hit of our time? Doesn’t feel like it to me. The numbers would say otherwise but something like CFMF just felt way bigger to me.

Maybe it’s because of the world we live in today with the virus.

Glad it’s him at the top though. He deserves it.

It’s because we haven’t really been to parties and other functions and s*** last year.

It could be, but it's hard to tell with so many things locked down.

It's definitely the least contested hit of all time. There really hasn't been much of anything close to its success and certainly its longevity in the past year.

I still havent heard this song

  • Feb 24, 2021

It came out in right time where 80s revivalism is very popular right now

  • Feb 24, 2021

I remember on the day it dropped thinking “its crazy how made an 80’s sounding song sound so exotic”

BL benefited from being released before COVID, since the pandemic started there hasn’t been a legitimate hit since. Therefore BL hasn’t had any real competition, with the pandemic major artist haven’t dropped because they want to wait until the pandemic is over. BL is a huge success not denying that, but the inflated numbers doesn’t tell the whole story.

I think this says more about the quality of music being released and not about Blinding Lights itself. It’s not BL’s fault that no other song released post-2020 has caught on like it has. People just need to up their song game lol

Gotta disagree, in 2020 started a global pandemic. Major artist were hesitant to release because of not being able to tour. Also a lot was going on in 2020 with the election and social injustice. Music was not on people’s minds last year. If you can’t see how that affect artist and having legitimate hits I don’t know what to tell you.

True. At the start of the pandemic didn't streaming numbers really decrease?

I’m not sure about that. I’m more referring to all the events that happened last year.

yeah we gotta find a way to adjust the charts for inflation like they do with movie box office.

gone with the wind, titantic, avatar, etc. will always be factored into the biggest movies of all time. all the avengers films with their advertising and high ticket prices can't reflect the popular demand people had for those other films.

We’ve had a good handful of megahits in the last ten years that are perfect storms of being: timeless, anthemic, infectious and one could even say aggressively safe. Look no further than Bruno Mars for example

But Blinding Lights stands out amongst these songs in that it’s incredibly cool. Often, being a bit ‘uncool’ is a pastiche - a rite of passage if you will - for these songs. But not for Blinding Lights

And who would be better for this than The Weeknd?
