toms run from doing enema to pulling off box car to do self titled and ava is one of the most amazing creative run in modern pop culture and actually legitimate genius but ppl are not ready for this convo they rather stick blink to joke songs and tom as a punk rocker that’s crazy about aliens
agreed. bcr and self titled were his peak, and are my two favourite albums from him
Expand please
well in 97 they did dude ranch total punk rock album with very raw sound and songs then they went big and did hits and got a far more produced sounds and songs were more tight and hooks through enema to take off just hooks and hooks while enema still had the fun take off starts bringing more angsty to it, tom really perfected the game and brought pop punk to the throne at that time everyone started copying (mark songs and does songs but he mostly just does the same stuff)
then after that in 2002 only a year after take off while everyone else who’s slow or late would still suck off of that (for example avril lavigne that u mentioned, dropped in 2002) tom did a side project that included travs but not mark (which created some tension altho mark is featured on one of the songs) and did a very angsty full on album way more aggressive and serious that he thought wouldnt go in for blink - needed to find himself more
and it was a hit and in 2003 back with blink they did a new album that again was nothing like the last blink or the box car altho it took elements from tom took from it, the self titled is a combination of so much, some pure blink but more experimental mature technics and sounds, still upbeat, it’s more subtle, had some spoken interlude, some hip hop instrumental interlude, some synths there, some more piano, some new concepts etc
no one did it like this
then they broke up, and tom formed this band called angels and airwaves and in 2007 did the debut album and again it was a restart of all we knew from him, heavily dived into u2 style guitars and spacey synths, like nothing you could sell to a blink fan who got hooked on take off your pants although they’re such tom infectious and simple hooks still , a signature of a real talent that knows to find himself and progress through sounds while still having his dna
but blink are popularized for joke stuff and tom being conspiracy alien dude and everyone overlooks that progression in such short run right there through 4 albums that is super fast and amazing, not one album wasted each brought and did something new
then they reformed without tom and phoned in hard the retro callbacks 😑😑
Before we enter the enema of state listening session a bit of info
Enema of the State is the third studio album by American rock band Blink-182, released on June 1, 1999, by MCA Records. After a long series of performances at various clubs and festivals and several indie recordings throughout the 1990s, Blink-182 first achieved popularity on the Warped Tour and in Australia following the release of their second album Dude Ranch (1997) and its rock radio hit "Dammit". To record their third album, Blink-182 turned to veteran punk rock producer Jerry Finn, who previously worked on Green Day's breakthrough album Dookie (1994). Enema was the band's first album to feature second drummer Travis Barker, who replaced original drummer Scott
