I mean I think Parasite if anything is pretty formulaic. Yeah it’s got twists but in the narrative spectrum of Bongs filmography, it’s by far his most formulaic. I feel not a single character in Parasite even has a soul. They all just feel like cynical symbols for Bong to convey his politics at us. He has been political before with Snowpiercer and The Host and I think the Host is far more interesting with its characters while Snowpiercer has a lot more attention to detail in its mystery and world building elements.
Ultimately, it just felt like Parasite was more of liberal preaching than actual filmmaking. The concept is mostly just super on the nose and it really just feels like it’s pretending to be a genre film but it has no interest in playing with any genre, it’s just there to be liberal af. It’s like inviting Bernie sanders to a party and he just starts going on about health care and poverty when you’re just trying to have a good time.

Bro I’m watching The Handmaiden for the first time. I’m about 20 minutes in but is it just me or does Parasite have a lot of similarities to this film?
From the Handmaiden being a con-artist who’s infiltrating the family. And the flashbacks shown of them practicing the letter reminded me of when the Dad and Son was practicing his lines for being a limo driver.
