I think it’s anybody’s right to not want to engage or support Brand New. But I guess at the risk of seeming like I’m defending his actions (which obviously I am not), I’ll try to throw out some nuance. The events happened over 20 years ago, Jesse Lacey has apologized about it, and was independently seeking help and trying to amend things even before the accusations came out. After being out of the spotlight for nearly a decade now, I have to assume the Jesse Lacey at age 50 is different than the Jesse Lacey at age 25.

What is the purpose of holding people accountable to their actions if we also can’t accept that there’s a way to improve of fix their behavior? Like reasonably, what is the expectation on what his course correction should have looked like?

I’d also throw out that most people don’t know what he was actually accused of doing and have somehow conflated it to being a pedophile rapist. There are artists who are violent domestic abusers and groomers who we still platform. What is it about this band that is such a lightning rod for contempt?

What was he accused of exactly? The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is one of my favorite albums but I discovered it pretty recently so I don’t know everything about all that but wasn’t it just that he was cheating on his wife?

Yeah not a good look lol. But my understanding is that it wasn’t a consistent thing and definitely not something he was still doing by the time it all came out. Which again, why I understand people who don’t want to support the band. it’s pretty gross. But I don’t know, it feels like he genuinely changed and rehabilitated, but maybe I’m just making excuses
