finished yumi and the nightmare painter last night, wow. gonna copy and paste my review from storygraph:

My first Sanderson book! What an amazing read. The world building was so strong on both sides of the story but I did feel like the influences were a little too heavy handed in Painter's world. Yumi's world was incredibly intriguing though. I couldn't wait for the story to swap back over to her world cause the sense of wonderment and intrigue leapt off the page.

The narrator was funny and I enjoyed the insight he provided, but I think there could've been less fourth wall breaking.

I was getting a little worried as I approached the halfway point because while I was enjoying the world building and getting to know Painter and Yumi, it felt like the narrative hadn't really moved that much. Just as that feeling was starting to creep up, boom, the story took off like a rocket and all of a sudden things start developing at a rapid pace, some questions get answered and even more get posed. I was enthralled and just had to keep reading. I hadn't realized how much I had grown to love Painter and Yumi but as things start happening I realized that the slower narrative build up is what allowed me to feel so connected to these characters.

The stage was perfectly set and Sanderson hit it out of the park. The final chapters are a total rollercoaster. Definitely something that will be sticking with me for a while.
