I finally feel like I'm playing a Zelda game when I play this
Didn't feel like that while playing BOTW, don't know why
I think the dreariness of TOTK brings that N64 zelda feeling back
I hate to say this but the game is starting to get boring because of the classic design flaws of an open world game
Everything is way too spread apart, way too much empty space and similar enemies (all I see for the most part is Bokoblin/Moblin/Chuchu/Keese/Construct variations with the occasional bosses)
It's dragging
Also, there aren't actual good rewards for doing things lmao

No good rewards? exploring and doing quests gets you armor or leads you to it, materials gets you upgrades, shrines gets you hearts and stamina, zonite gets you batteries. You’re tripping. Especially compared to other recent open worlds like hogwarts legacy or JEDI survivor where everything you get feels like some useless cosmetic
If there’s too much empty space you’re probably passing by all the quests and caves without noticing lol

it feels like the side quests are there just for the sake of the quest itself, not the reward after
ill be getting resistance elixirs I could have crafted myself
and the caves are definitely cool, but the structure for all of them is so similar
the rupees-armor pipeline is the only reward that feels truly substantial, now if they have special weapons you can buy for rupees (idk if they do yet) that would be fire
but yeah obviously it's way better than most open world games regardless

there’s a whole bunch of quests related to armor, you gotta look out for 2 treasure hunters and meet them near the volcano area. also finding the old maps helps you get armor in the depths btw
I love the pipeline of getting armor then hunting for materials to upgrade and get the set bonuses
so satisfying
make sure you do the dragon tears quest btw it really ties everything together

The game does get tiring after a while as everything feels very samey and just blends together, the rewards don't feel that special, a lot of areas and challenges are copy pasted all over the map, and most side quests are just not that interesting
But u can switch up the way you're playing entirely, try something new, maybe explore the depths, focus on the sky, use vehicles for all of your traveling, etc. It helps to break up the repetitiveness

bet I've got like 6 X's marked in the depths the map is just so massive it's hard to get around lmao

yeah this what I'm trying to do, just change environments/styles in the game now and then like a little refresher

Don't underestimate ultrahand btw vehicles make traversal a lot less tedious especially in the depths

build this s*** it helps a lot

Love this game but I’m ready to finish it
Haven’t found all shrines or finished the depths map
Kind of want to just get to the end but also want to feel like I really completed it
Alright so a ways out of release from this game and with the initial hype kinda chilled out, I think I have my general thoughts together about this game.
I had an absolute blast for the first 40 hours of this game. For reference, I’m a lifelong Zelda fan, I loved BOTW. This game felt immediately better than BOTW… and tbh I think it is. But I don’t think I like it more.
Idk y’all. I think this game is pretty overhyped if I’m being honest. And I definitely contributed to that in the first month. But man… when I got to that first temple after all the buzz about “dungeons are back”… I was so let down. These dungeons are no better than the divine beats imho.
Don’t get it twisted, I still think this is a FANTASTIC game. But I feel no pull to log 200 hours in this like I did BOTW. Because I feel like I already have. It doesn’t make its own statement singular to BOTW strong enough that I want to invest an insane amount of time in it

I think the problem is it’s cleaner and tighter than it’s predecessor - a lot of little things were cleaned up and improved - but that’s really all it’s got. It’s better but less enjoyable at the same time, and I think that’s because there’s no new substantial content and it’s just not enough to be impressive again 6 years later with the same old tricks. I don’t wanna say “glorified DLC” but when you look at Majora’s Mask shifting the entire structure of the game you wonder what in this game took 6 years

Except majoras mask had mostly the same tools, the ocarina, the bow, the hookshot, lens of truth, bombchu, deku nuts, magic beans, etc. this game has completely different tools, mechanics and abilities than botw

Yeah i agree it’s definitely not a glorified DLC at all. But idk I was just hoping for more. I think in my mind I was really hoping for BOTW with traditional Zelda dungeons. And instead I got BOTW with new abilities. New abilities that again, are fun… but not eh enough that I’m being pulled back.
I’m just really curious to see where the Zelda franchise goes from here. Obviously they’ve never shied away from doing something totally different despite what the people expect or want… but honestly I’d be so disappointed if this was just kinda the new Zelda format for a while. And again, I’m saying that as someone who loved BOTW and would still say I liked TOTK. But in a world where every game is trying to make these epic massive open world games, a linear traditional 3D Zelda game in the 2020s would feel so refreshing.

But it added the time mechanic and pivoted to focus on side quests which makes it really unique from its predecessor. So much so that it’s still a hot debate 23 years later which one is better
And yeah it has the tools from OOT but also 20 something masks and 3 new transformations…and a new map
. And that was 23 years ago

Oot had a time travel mechanic too, and masks, and side quests. Majoras mask just expanded on those things. Totk expands on what botw had. And it added 2 new maps, and vastly changed the 3rd map.

I would love a new traditional zelda game but I’ve accepted that for the mainline games I can’t imagine them deviating back to that. My hope is that they focus more on progression next game. I think designing the game around everything being accessible and able to be done the second you start is hugely problematic. It wrecks the sense of progression. I miss when Zelda had things you couldn’t do until you got the ability to.

Everything? Game developers themselves were shook this game took only 6 years. Yall misremembering majora's mask's additions, its clearly a new, different game, its still impressive what they were able to do in 1.5 years (under heavy crunch unfortunately), but i share that same sentiment with tears. The easiest way for me to explain why this game took years is asking you what game works like this one, what open world game has this amount of depth, gameplay variety, complexity and ambition.

I don’t really think there’s that much gameplay variety on display here. There’s still almost no enemy variety. Every part of the depths looks and plays the same. The sky islands speak for themselves
