No problem at all, glad to do it since most don't have the opportunity to attend
Wish one of us could have been there for the talk on his time as a firefighter
And yeah, I wish you and everyone else that rocks with Ka could have been there too
I made all three nights. The firefighter panel might have been my favorite honestly because it really showed a different side of Ka. There looked to be a decent amount of FDNY in the crowd, and you could see how loved and respected he was in that community. He moved up in rank pretty quickly, and that unfortunately is unusual for a Black firefighter, but it was further proof of how much of an overachiever he was in everything he did. There were some funny stories they shared of his antics around the firehouse, cooking competitions, and particularly a guacamole contest that he and one of the truck chauffeurs went toe to toe in that they both swore they won. They discussed his instincts, his calm demeanor in the face of emergencies, his athletic skills, the way he treated all the firefighters under him as his friends and equals, the point in which everyone found out he was a rapper, etc. He kept in touch with quite a few of them after he retired. He retired to spend more time with Mimi. They said they always knew when a new album was coming when he would hole himself up in his office all night. They all had his back when the NY Post did that bullshit hit piece on him. It was a really great night. Ka was a f***ing superhero if there ever was one. I am so grateful to his family and friends who made this event possible, and I hope it was as rewarding to them as it was to us listeners. I imagine some of this had to be exhausting and bittersweet, especially for Mimi, but she was a trooper and really did appear to be enjoying it. She was hearing a lot of these stories for the first time herself. Damn, I hope they make this into an annual thing. RIP to the greatest who ever did it.

Thank you so so much for this
And I can't echo the thanks to his friends and family that made the event happen enough
Even though I posted my notes from the first after hours and my homie's notes from the third, I'd love to read your notes/thoughts from both of those nights as well if you're up for that
Many thanks and much love in advance
Y’all are doing a seriously awesome thing updating this thread with this. It’s literally on the ground journalism and it’s essentially a closing chapter for this thread. Great for listeners that couldn’t attend

You did a great job of covering these events. I don't know how much I have to add here, but a few things that stuck out to me are the first night with the Natural Elements/Night Breed panel I found it surprising to hear that Ka used to hang out with Monie Love. I also enjoyed hearing how he made an impression on Das Efx back when they met at a show back in the day. I'm from Ka's generation, so Monie and Das were huge to me back in the day. He was a huge fan of The Boot Camp Click and Gza's Liquid Swords. He would play Cold World by Gza over and over. The firefighter panel mentioned how Ka had a really intense instinct for scoping out people who were up to no good, so it was interesting hearing Marci talk about how Ka wouldn't f*** with anybody he thought was fake or a generally bad human. Marci mentioned he just wouldn't speak to certain people if he picked up a bad vibe. I loved hearing Marci talk about how he and Ka would get into debates regarding Lebron James. Apparently Ka was not a fan. Marci said there's no Bron slander permitted in his home. I loved hearing about the argument that Alchemist and Ka had about Rammellzee's song Beat Box. Alc thought it was a game changing song for its time. Ka disagreed and was heated when later that same day someone in the studio brought that song up randomly and was praising it. They didn't get into why exactly Ka disagreed so strongly. I assume it's because the song is kind of goofy. Not that it matters, but I would have taken the pro-Rammellzee side in this one. Really thought it was funny to learn that Ka loved cartoons, and Rick & Morty was his favorite show. I never saw it, but maybe I'll check it out. I also wanted to add that the firefighters who cooked always made sure there was a vegetarian option for Ka. Little things like that are what I went for. It's evident how good a human he was just by listening to his music, but if anyone had a shred of doubt about that, these panels definitely drove home the fact that he was a solid dude. Anybody who ever got to meet him knows how sincere he was about learning about his listeners. Dude was complex and obviously had it rough growing up in Brownsville, but he had a selfless heart, was loyal to his people, was funny as hell, and was passionate about everything he believed in.

Was it Cold Facts that Mimi stated the video was filmed in Paris? I thought that was interesting. Those Grief Pedigree videos are incredible. Guerrilla video shooting on no budget but look like polished pros created them. Mimi and Ka had great eyes for bringing those tracks to life. Ka taught himself how to edit after she shot his first video. Amazing. Definitely didn't look like amateurs shot those.

You and @GoldOf1000Mornings showing love to my coverage put a huge smile on my face and made my Saturday
Thank you so much and much love and many thanks to everyone else in here that's been showing love
Can't say it enough but I love this thread and am beyond lucky to have had the chance to go and bring what I could to anyone that couldn't attend
Also you reminded me that the woman that was next to me at the first after hours fr thought I was a journalist because I brought out a small notebook and was taking notes by hand
She kept looking over to peep what I was writing too 😭😭
Forgot to mention this from the third night panel but:
Roc said Ka would habitually get fresh for no reason at all. Said he had a running joke with Ka where he’d ask “yo, what you got on your feet right now - $2000?” and Ka would deadpan “yeah…. a little more”
Somebody who interviewed Ka back around the release of Yen Lo brought up that Ka mentioned there’s a “hidden meaning” to the numbered track titles of Yen Lo. Ka said that, at the time, he wasn’t gonna reveal it. But it would be disclosed someday. The interviewer asked “Is today the day?” to which Preservation laughed and replied “Today is not the day”

Thank you so much for this
If you got anything else please post it, been loving all of it
Laughed so hard reading the LeBron stuff, would have loved to talk ball with Ka
Monie Love was before my time and there's still a lot of history I gotta go through so I appreciate this part of your post heavy
Wrote down Monet Love in my notes and was befuddled when I couldn't find anything on her later ☠️☠️
Forgot if it was Voo or Nkosi that was talking about it but I loved that whole story about Ka trying to work with Monie on a radio bump (?) three different times as the only time he compromised on anything and his bad experience with that solidifying his stance on never compromising ever again

This discussion sounds like it was from the third after hours and sadly I was only around for the first
So much love to @Vox and @sentient_sherm_bag and all the other folks holding the thread down (I've been a bit MIA). But god damn, it's so heartwarming to see the listening community come together to celebrate Ka like this.
Wasn't able to hit the pop ups unfortunately, but I would've LOVED to attend. It's so beautiful reading all of these anecdotes and idiosyncrasies about Ka, especially considering how he stopped doing interviews in the latter part of his career. But yeah beautiful s*** all around. Love to everyone in here for making this a dope space.

Wish you could have come too dawg, it sounds like they're might be more events in the future though
And yeah seeing all this love and everyone coming together has been special for sure
Survived ruins, was it my doing or fate
We made it through, we made it through, we made it through
Is this pre-scripted or am I doing it great
First half hits way different now that he's gone.
Been conditioned to sound ill cause this is Brownsville... Kaaaaaaa
These are @sentient_sherm_bag 's initial notes:
Ka loved Rick & Morty and tried to put all his friends onto it
Roc and Preservation both met him through events stemming from GZA’s Firehouse
He rode a fixed-gear bicycle
He once gave Preservation a popcorn machine out of nowhere, Ka loved air-popped popcorn
Roc was on some “starving artist s***” and Ka out of nowhere dropped off 4000 to hold him down for some activities if you get my drift
He was a perfectionist in every sense and would sometimes spend an entire year working one song to perfection
Producing for Ka was hard because of that, he only wanted the best
Made Preservation read The Manchurian Candidate before they started Yen Lo. He had been into the book and movie heavily long before the album came about
Roc has some Ka beats he’s been sitting on that he says “yall are gonna hear that soon”
ka loving rick and morty is so heartwarming lmao
