Yea it was worth it honestly and I despised accounting
Did you despise accounting going into the job or did the hatred just grow?
I don't hate accounting, I just never really cared for it.
Worth noting you don’t even have to go the corp. finance or CPA route to succeed after big 4
Finance careers don’t care about the CPA as much and if you want to lateral into consulting/pure finance you can after Big 4 Audit or Advisory
Me and two other associates I knew from my class left after 1.5 years for PE/Investment Research/Asset Management roles
Agreed but you can easily do this starting in industry and not have to go through the PA bs, especially if your company culture strongly encourages moving around.
I began in F500 Internal Audit last year and I'm already connecting with managers in our company's M&A and Corpdev to maybe see if I can laterally transfer after my CPA with a big raise. Not to mention FP&A is an easy rotation as well, and I don't even to sit for a single exam.
Big 4 stamp helps but it's not nearly as prestigious anymore as people put it out to be. I can only see it if you live in Canada because the wages are so awful up there for accounting grads that the B4 is a big differentiator.
What would you recommend doing in the accounting field?
There's honestly so much s*** you can do in accounting that it's hard to pinpoint.
What kind of accounting work do you want to do (tax, auditing, financial reporting, bread and butter accounting)? Do you have a specific industry you want to work in, like fashion, video games, etc? Do you want to push for higher-level positions like executive leadership/C-suite or just chill as a senior and work remote with a consistent schedule? Would you be willing to take a pay cut to do literally nothing all day or would you rather push hours for potential for big wages?
You can basically do a lot of s*** with an accounting degree and a CPA under your belt.

It grew but I made it through and built my resume out for exit opportunities

I’d still say the Big 4 name is prestigious, all the investment banks and smaller research firms I interviewed at respected it
Coming out of Big 4 people know you’re willing to put in hours and are decently competent. The client serving aspect/project management is also one of the biggest bonuses too.
If you’re smart and ambitious you can lateral anywhere — personally tho compared to B4 audit I think industry would be tougher to exist out of and into entry level finance/front office roles
