Like I love "pretentious " art s*** I love Tetsuo and Youth and deciphered the s*** out of it. But I dont get the insecurity of caring who calls you pretentious or who doesn't like it. kogoyosgreat definition you gave there. it does come down to taste tho because I couldn't enjoy that movie at all. tried reading Kaufman's debut novel Antkind around that time and it was an even worse experience lol
still love Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine, and Being John Malkovich tho
Primer and Pi felt pretentious to me too
i think charlie moreso just has his head up his ass sometimes lol. I think thats different from being pretentious but there is a fine line between the 2 ngl
Like if a director has his head up his ass being self indulgent,the movie can still be enjoyable and dope.
But when the movie just reeks of “hahaha im so f***ing smart and ur not f*** you” thats when its pretentious, but again. Very thin like between the 2
I take back what i said about pretentious not being a valid critique btw. Now that that im thinking about it and considering some of the posts itt. Films can be pretty pretentious, i just think its kinda rare. i feel like more directors just be in their own heads alot. But imo that makes for some great art. Jus gotta toe that line.
