Andrei rublev almost isn’t even pretentious, it’s like a legit period piece. Didn’t expect it to be so interesting
I watched "The Skin I Live In" and I think it was ok, but it was many years ago.
Also "Great Beauty" 2013 (that was good, I like to look at Italy)
And I once started to watch "Piano Teacher" (2001) and I dropped it on some moment because I've had enough unappetizing scenes. I watched it because in the University there was suppossed to be a discussion, also I watched Piano (1993) around that time, and I dropped it too. But it probably doesn't count as European movie as I checked and it's New Zealand.
Recently I've watched Wasabi 2001, it's ok, Jean Reno is pretty cool.
Also watched Oxygen in 2021 (maybe it's considered a French movie).
None of these are among my favs, like Rasie said focus per country bc Europe as a whole has so many different things to offer. Better yet, lots of countries like Italy or France have had multiple different creative waves

What have you watched? Tarkovsky fans always seem to recommend his worst films first for some reason

Stalker, Solaris (partly), Ivans Childhood
But now that i think of it i might not have even finished Ivans Childhood either might have fell asleep
Like literally nothing exciting happened in Stalker, it just dragged along and it dragged along and none of the philosophical talk hooked me in either

Had the exact same feeling as you first time I watched it. The atmosphere of that film alone hooked me the second time. I’d suggest watching The Sacrifice maybe.
He also one of the only ‘philosophic & slow’ filmmakers I don’t find pretentious
