I think many of you are forgetting these words are never about content itself

example something cannot be overrated without being rated

something cant be pretentious without being perceived and held in high regard by others

They are often words utilized to trigger an emotional response often more speaking on a fanbase or others reactions to art

its never or rarely art itself is designed to be pretentious or overrated unless it is just incomprehensible most art of art films and high fine art that in some way degrades the audience for attempting to perceive it or understand the direction

Pretentious and overrated are like the only "critiques" trying to get someone to be forced to defend something

calling something bad, trash, terrible perhaps gets someone to try to defend something but at the end of the day it has to be bad, trash or terrible at an objective they feel the directors or writers are aiming for

I mean bad film making per se would be not connecting with the audience with desired message in the given medium

medium is the message blah blah blah but the moving images themselves cant be "bad"

they can be visually appealing, not well shot, cant see whats going on, disorienting etc

but again on here people just say bad, trash, terrible, worst thing I have ever seen
