I think the general public still has a strong distaste for trump so a strong dem candidate could turn this around with a solid backing but that’s just me being hopeful

Biden has a historically bad gap in not only swing states but even states that leaned towards him in 2020.

You can't take 538 at face value. Their models are heavily dependent on something called "voter enthusiasm", in which Biden is losing by 20 points. That means Trump voters are significantly more likely to actually come out and vote for him. People who may lean Biden are significantly less likely to actually go out and vote.
