They are. They literally are created images that respond to the current culture and can even give insight or commentary on events. It's just it is so accessible that the endless sea of trash is wild and that only certain memes survive past a month

It is, my dumbass art professor disagreed but if dadaism and collage are respected 20th century artistic movements then memes are just an evolution and fusion of both these movements

    it's pop culture

  • Jun 10, 2020

Yeah, but it's for the most part trash. I wonder did the common people think Art Nouveau was trash when everyone was doing it?

If you think about it memes are amazing. Like you get millions of people basically understanding a inside joke and trying to give it a new twist

It is a shame that some kids ruin them by making it about some dumb movie like Joker or Endgame. I fear that companies in the future actively try to make some stuff into meme for free publicity

You must not have payed attention to those movements to see the clear difference between those and memes.

And nah op they’re not. If anything they’re pop culture like dawg said

Yes whether you like it or not ngl, they’re an expression of the creator (artist) and often a commentary

  • I wouldn't call it an "online art movement"

But memes are art. Art is anything that moves you in some way emotionally. Word to Shia Lebouf for saying something like that.

Well what are the differences then, because admittedly I'm not the biggest expert on 20th century art as a whole but from my understanding dadaism is based on rejection of "logic" in art and embracing of the absurd, usually within a political context. Sounds a lot like what certain memes serve to achieve to me

Also I can't say calling it pop culture as opposed to art makes too much sense, considering Warhol fit within both those categories pretty well

at the same time people think their reality, which is sort of dangerous

    tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/d/dada Read this for dada

That’s because pop art was literally merging pop with art.

Memes, the DNA of the soul

I love that Metal Gear uses the original definition of memes so enthusiastically, it makes the speech about memes into a meme itself. Memes are often art, not always but that's the point

    are knock knock jokes art
