That’s because pop art was literally merging pop with art.
Ok, that's more or less what knowledge I had for dada. I still feel like memes are art though. They may not be the artistic output of a specific likeminded collective like the Dadaists were, but much like Dada was a response to the War it could be argued that memes are an artistic response to the digital/internet age.
I think about Duchamp's Fountain when I think about this argument, it's quite literally a 20th century s*** post that called into question what could be considered art and art historians are still a***yzing that urinal to this day. Who's to say Dat Boi isn't gonna be seen the same way decades from now

You’re not reading or wanting to understand the movement then. It wasn’t just about the war. It was what the war could do to art. It was about pushing boundaries that people hadn’t in the art world before. You’re comparing one instance to a whole “meme” movement.
And are you just saying that about memes or is that officially stated? Because you know memes of today are different than 12 years ago. Those are called memes too
I deadass shared a Steamed Hams video in my video art studio class a couple years back
I’d rather not want to be associated with memes as my generations art honestly I’d prefer nothing there
some dude i know had a meme page in 2016 and sold it for 5k a year later. all original memes that he made. So i always consider it art
Whether or not memes are art isnt up or debate dam near anything is art and the commodification of tht just makes it a product
The debate is whether it’s a movement comparable to like french new wave or dadaism or punk or hip hop
To answer op id prolly argue it’s more nuanced like memes as a whole is a whole new medium in itself like the advent of film & within that you get movements like post irony, black Twitter, the Pepe s***

I don't mean to put memes all together as a singular movement, maybe comparing it to dada made it seem that way. I see it more as it's own medium just like painting and sculpture. Maybe influenced by Dada, but calling it an extension of the movement was a poor choice of words on my part. A digital, easily made and easily dispersed media. Everything I've said about memes is my own opinion, I think I might've read an article about the artistic integrity of memes a couple years back but I dunno how much that influenced my opinions.
What talk to me normal said pretty much summarizes how I see it lmao
I think it was the Feel Good Inc one, I was mainly sharing that one was cause this girl I was seeing in the class was a big Gorillaz fan

Just read the post above you. Can you consider it an art and call it art? Sure. Is it a movement and it should it be documented as one? No
Memes often have better social commentary than in other forms of media. They are often funnier than comedy in other forms of media too. They are not just art, but high level art and important to our culture and movements within it.
Memes are very often used to teach people about certain social issues. They are not just random nonsense.
I’ll say that yes all memes are technically art if we go by the anything can be art, which I don’t necessarily disagree with. But I guess a lot don’t have value per se such as bass boosted, bottom text, unexpected video switch, etc
