I genuinely don't get its just really skinny white boys rapping with autotune, and semi appropriating hip hop music.

The aesthetics r like Lean's stuff (I get he innovated cloud rap) but just way more loud, and missing a lot of the luster

Am I missing something? I can only take so much cringey dancing, and earrape vocals

wdym aesthetic, like the sound itself or their image?

  • Mar 9, 2020

    bladee’s melancholic sound is nice

ecco2k and thaiboy are genuinely dope

the production is like half dope soundcloud rap prod and half disjointed indie pop

Only 2 drain gang members are white first off. The other drain members are drifting into more experimental pop territory. (ESPECIALLY ECCO2K) It's like a euphoric feeling. It sounds like you're on a cloud or in heaven. The reverb and EDM inspired beats is what really gets me. A lot of the early stuff (pre-2017) is trash as f***. early Bladee is barely music lol. Listen to E by Ecco2k and some songs from Icedancer. You'll get it

I'm not a fan but there's some stuff I like (mainly Eversince).

My friends who are into it seem to really be into the cathartic feeling they put out, like Chloe said it's like being on a cloud or in Heaven. It's just that a lot of the sounds seem cheap (to me).

I swear most ppl (incl my friends) claim to like them ironically at first, then it clicks.. IDK about all that but I think the 'ironic' part is because of the fashion/visual imagery they use.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who like this enjoyed EDM type music back in 00's

I actually f***ed with Ecco2k, maybe because it felt like more thought was put into the music. Do u have to be like really down on your luck to listen to this. Cause other people who listen to this s*** f*** with the Microphones, Elliot Smith, Alex G, and indie s***. I feel like its primarily a white sad boy thing, but its universiality confuses me

No you don't have to be down to listen. A lot of the s*** is fun music. and it's not just sad white kids. A lot of young queer people (such as myself) are the biggest fans. The white boys are just the main ones you see tryna copy Bladee's aesthetic. I'm never sad listening to DG. The lyrics might cut deep but so did pop punk lyrics. It was still fun music

It's easy to discredit any art form when you break it down to it's simplest form and say something like "it's just white boys using autotune". What do you actually not like about it? The vocals? The lyrics? The production? You don't have to like it, but at least offer some other reasons as to why you don't then "muh autotune". That's the same logic boomers use when they call any non white rapper a mumble rapper.

I like Drain Gang because the production is always top notch. Bladee, Ecco and Thaiboy all have their own unique styles. I connect with their lyrics of feeling alone, depressed, anxiety, being lost, trying to find yourself. etc. They're all extremely creative and the quality and diversity of the work they consistently put out is something that not many other groups can match.

You should really give the Trash Island LP a listen. Each member shines and does their thing. It's a great way to be introduced to each member imo.

well I don't ever want to discredit any art form, I just use basic assessments to open up a conversation.

The production kind of reminds me of Lean but something about it is way too high energy and pixie like.

I can't relate to the music cause I feel like its void of substance or emotions. Thats the one component that draws me to most music
