Chance released Coloring Book on May 13, 2016, and the album won Best Rap Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards. It was also the first streaming-only album ever to win a Grammy.

Following this there were several snippets circulating, some posted by Chance himself, making fans think that we might be getting his magnum opus.

He had 2016 on lock and Coloring Book had enough legs to last through 2017, but by 2018 people were ready for his actual album. He should've made a 12-14 track album including the 6 singles he dropped that year, but he fumbled the bag by gambling on The Big Day being hailed as a masterpiece when he started working on it in February 2019.
