Same exact thoughts
a shame because her run from Vroom Vroom EP to HIFN is legendary
her wanting to be subversive by making the conventional pop record her label wanted her to make as a young artist, backfired a bit
Album is way better than the singles would have you believe as singular songs. Off the first listen it might be at the top of her discography to me
No way

the rina single great too
So happy this album delivered. Was lowkey skeptical cuz of her twitter antics and s*** but I loved this album first listen.
baby took some time to grow one me, but it's a bop. My favorite is probably every rule rn, and the weakest is probably twice.
I was a little skeptical with the singles, they were good but didn't give the best picture. With the rest of the songs tho, they somehow seem to all blend together perfectly. Can't wait to see her live in two weeks
Looked up your dates today ain’t she skipping my city entirely, charli how have we wronged you
I understand Charli wanting to move away from 'hyperpop' but this album doesn't seem to be have any new ideas that push the pop genre forward like Charli's other records and choose to instead mine the sounds of the past to the point of taking Cry For You and changing the words around.
I know that "hyperpop" fans are annoying but choosing to rebel against them by making a largely conventional pop album seems like a weird way of breaking the rules of the genre.
idk maybe its not that deep and i just have to listen to the fun sounds.

“Hyperpop fans” may be cringe but hifrn is her best work imo so the music stands on it’s own without the hipster labels

does every album really have to have new ideas that push the genre forward? there is only so much room for groundbreaking stuff anyway especially in a genre like pop which, even if underground, relies more than others on listeners being accustomed to certain sounds. i dont really see this album as pure brainless revivalism or only looking to the past, some of the singles i can understand more of that feeling but a lot of the album tracks do sound uniquely Charli still and aren't something she has already done before in her discography (title track, Lightning). I also agree with people saying the album is better as a whole than individual pieces, and i don't think this type of dance-pop is exactly a genre where we just have a bottomless supply of consistently great albums anyway
i do agree with being sick of the remake/interpolation type songs though, Used to Know Me isnt bad but I really was not interested in yet another song that uses Show Me Love
this isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination. i just wonder if by her trying so hard to subvert expectations, she ended up giving the label exactly what they wanted. hm.
def not as consistent as vroom vroom or hifn, but i have a feeling this album is going to age nicely. and the songs that hit, f***ing hit.

its fun accessible album that people can play at parties (kinda like future nostalgia)

Fair point. Crash and Lighting were my favourite tracks. I guess I’m kinda bummed because I think of Charli as someone in the pop sphere (a genre plagued with artists and executives obsessed with safe bets) that isn’t afraid of taking risks and being bold while consistently delivering great music and I’m hoping that this album is not the beginning of a period in her discography that is defined by stunted artistic growth.
Anyway to each their own, I’m glad you’re digging the album RVI.
