Fair point. Crash and Lighting were my favourite tracks. I guess I’m kinda bummed because I think of Charli as someone in the pop sphere (a genre plagued with artists and executives obsessed with safe bets) that isn’t afraid of taking risks and being bold while consistently delivering great music and I’m hoping that this album is not the beginning of a period in her discography that is defined by stunted artistic growth.
Anyway to each their own, I’m glad you’re digging the album RVI.
in a way i partially feel like this album was her finishing some of what she was trying to do with the "xcx world" era leak stuff. obviously there is some PC music stuff in that era too but also some of her most straightforward "dance-pop" up until Crash was made. and since Pop 2 was the thing that came out instead i think in the back of her mind she wanted to return to some of that style later.
i definitely dont think theres any chance she'll just make a Crash 2 next or anything like that. i dont think she sees this one as stagnation because she hasnt really made an album in this style yet, even her pre-"hyperpop" stuff is pretty different
dam i didn't like this album
not because of the commercial sound but because it felt like there was no feeling in this which bums me out because ik this was her passion project. even though i didn't like this album, i'll give her credit for songs like crash, new shapes, beg for u, every rule (my favourite on this), yuck, and twice. those have so much personality in them
the rest though feel void of personality
does every album really have to have new ideas that push the genre forward? there is only so much room for groundbreaking stuff anyway especially in a genre like pop which, even if underground, relies more than others on listeners being accustomed to certain sounds. i dont really see this album as pure brainless revivalism or only looking to the past, some of the singles i can understand more of that feeling but a lot of the album tracks do sound uniquely Charli still and aren't something she has already done before in her discography (title track, Lightning). I also agree with people saying the album is better as a whole than individual pieces, and i don't think this type of dance-pop is exactly a genre where we just have a bottomless supply of consistently great albums anyway
i do agree with being sick of the remake/interpolation type songs though, Used to Know Me isnt bad but I really was not interested in yet another song that uses Show Me Love
Every album doesn’t but it’s kinda a valid criticism when pushing the boundaries of the genre is part of what was so great about her other work . I don’t hold artists hostage to their past or anything but it’s not like she replaced that innovation with better songwriting or production - I think all around this album is pretty whelming. But it’s cool, it’s just 1 album I think the drawn out roll out & weird social media stuff prob making the reception worse than it would be otherwise I’m sure she’ll bounce back there’s still some joints on this that’ll get rinsed for decades to come
Man the vocoder/filter parts in Lightning sounds soooo good with her voice I wish they weren’t attached to that song
Nah this s*** slap front to back loving this

You named a lot of songs lmao
You named a lot of songs lmao
those are the only ones I liked
half of the album
This is really short since like half of the tracks are around 2 min but I do respect anyone who puts out a trim project in this day and age (though we'll probably get a deluxe which kinda defeats what I'm saying). I'm more into Pop 2 pc music Charli but there are some solid tracks on here. Lightning is great. Still not sure how I feel overall

Well now that you edited your comment yea lol but maybe more will grow on you

Caroline's part is prob my fav part of the track just because I'm a big fan of her but it def feels tacked on and like it was put together in just a few takes
