All the criticisms for this album when it first came out were so weak “the mixing 🤓” “he’s just flexing about cars now”.

Most people mark Flowerboy as when Tyler leveled up but imo it’s always been Cherry Bomb, with the Wolf Instrumentals coming out it really set in how poverty the sounds he used to use were, where as on Cherry Bomb nothing sounds cheap, the production is bonkers, he pulls off multiple styles, the structures are fresh, the features were all used perfectly.

Just because you like an album doesn't make it a classic.

If it's overlooked, it's simply not a classic

    all of em?

  • deathcamp rocks though

  • Apr 11, 2023

Yeah it’s obviously his best, the level up in production and the perfect middle ground after the shock value and before the “reinvention” which worked but feels pandering

    Idk if that’s true

I like the album a lot

but anyone who is anyone could hear songs like pilot, run, cherry bomb and say they’re mixed aggressively. and with sonic/audio clarity clearly not being the main goal for Tyler.

I do think it’s conflated with the whole album though when it’s really just those 3 songs that have that style to a distracting level (if you don’t like it, I kinda do)

Yea the content on one song is cringe and morally questionable, im not throwing out the whole album because of that

We all listen to artists that have actually done terrible s***/made songs that have morally wrong content

  • Apr 11, 2023

    Classic

Also the mixing argument is weak because it was intentional, same dude who mixed this mixed Random Access Memories

    mr get dough

B****** isn’t even in the discussion for me because I have huge sentimental value with it and is the most nostalgic but musically it isn’t that so I just tuck it away

    Goblin is clearly his worst

Then WOLF holds it own in terms of like world building, i think the hooks on the album were strong, and sound design is good but in terms of like the production as a whole its so limited compared to the following albums imo but he did such a good job creating a sound its hard to really hear unless you really listen for it.

CB has some peak production, introduced flex tyler which I love, and some good energy, some beautiful songs but I think definitely lacks in the writing and arrangement department

IGOR also does well in production, as well as writing and arrangement, but I think lacks in subject matter sometimes but I get why because he was doing a concept.

Call Me I think has tylers best rapping, a lot of good production, perfected flex tyler and was motivational, and world building but of course doesnt have like those big production songs

I think Flower Boy is the best mix of everything. Great production even if not as adventurous as the albums its between, great writing in terms of arrangement and hooks and catchiness, great rapping, great subject matter, consistent sound that has range etc. but I do think certain albums do specific things better, like wolf is more fun, cb/igor have better production, call me has better rapping, but flower boy is the best blend

I feel like his next album is gonna be the magnum opus that can blend everything together as well as Flower Boy did, but with better rapping, more adventurous sound choices, and a concept to boot.
I have little to no evidence for that, but when I saw that shirtless T in the SORRY NOT SORRY video, something just clicked inside me. Something was in his eyes, man. Both a ferocity/hunger AND an understanding with wisdom I’ve never seen simultaneously from him before.
He’s been “in the zone” for years now, great project after great project, even a classic in Flower Boy, but I think he’s finally grown to the point that he’ll be releasing all timers from here on out.
