Frank Sinatra - Come Fly With Me (58)

I'm pretty mixed about this album, just because I think the concept of it is pretty dope. A travelling theme album with tracks inspired by different parts of the world is interesting. However, the album just ain't do it for me, which is surprising since this album is pretty well loved by Sinatra fans and considered one of his best. The album is very dull at times. Sinatra's voice sounds pretty nice throughout the whole thing, but the crooning and the super subdue instrumentation makes the project pretty sleepy for the majority of it. I think the length of it is also an issue, 45 mins imo doesn't work that well with this style of vocal jazz/standards.

Billie Holiday - Lady In Satin (58)

This album here is vocal jazz at its finest All of the lush orchestral elements really compliments Billie's aged voice. This alongside the background behind the album, with Billie's substance and d*** abuse and the album being released a year prior to her death, sort of creates this melancholic, haunting atmosphere.

Her vocals may have not been the best, they're even rough at times, but idk the emotion her voice has in majority of this album is really effective. I said it earlier itt, but this album is pretty reminiscent of Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours, because of the instrumentation and also similar song choices. It turns out she actually did look to that album as inspiration for this one and it's noticeable.

I will say there are moments where the album can be a little dull or slow, like it did take me a minute to appreciate the sound of the album.

Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie & Sonny Stitt - For Musicians Only (58)

This was really solid project. I believe the runtime for this album was like 43 minutes, but it really felt much shorter than that at times when I was listening through. The album opens with a very high pace and energetic track with Be-Bop and keeps that same energy and pacing for majority of the album. The album really never lets up for the most part and keeps you engaged with all the switch ups as well. I don't know too much about the technicalities and intricacies of jazz music so I might be wrong here, but a lot of these pieces seem like they would be pretty complicated to play especially the solos. Apparently, every song on here was recorded in one take, which makes the album all that more impressive tbh. If I'm making it out correctly, the trumpet playing was the star of this album for me.

Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else (58)

Just off the lineup, I expected nothing less than greatness, based off the notability of the members listed. The album definitely delivered, from the opening track all the way down to the bonus track. The album was just able to retain a great balance of slow cool melodic pieces but also keeping it entertaining and engaging. The solos were probably the best portion of this album imo. The trumpet and sax solos were probably the most memorable aspects of some of these songs, not to discount the other instruments tho that also played very well.

Looking at some bg info and the credits, the trumpet and sax were handled by Cannonball and Miles. Apparently it was kind of a competition between these two on this album in the sense that they both wanted to find the right places to shine, specifically with their solos. I might not be at a level of jazz listening where I can discern everything going on, but listening to the album with this in mind, I can sort of see that, but despite this, both of them along with everyone else were still able to compliment each other extremely well.
