I agree. He doesn't have anyone telling him what doesn't sound good so he puts stuff out thinking it's a dope song when it can be garbage. I wish he had "that guy" in his corner. Janet had Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. MJ had Quincy. Usher had JD and B Cox. JT has Timbaland and Pharrell. He doesn't have that connection with someone who's grown with him musically, so it feels like there is nowhere for him to go. Which is probably why people complain about him singing the same song over and over again. No one is helping him evolve, so he's very hit and miss. He's unreliable at this point.

Most artists are inconsistent to an extent, but he's all over the place sometimes. And when he's not all over the place trend chasing, he goes back to his "my d*** will change your life" formula which people are tired of.

I wish he'd take a step back and just stop. Stop and listen to other music, work with new producers, other writers, etc. If he took even a 3 year break he could come back with a solid, complete, cohesive album. But he doesn't seem interested. It's sad to me cuz I feel like he has no vision. He's just putting stuff out just to put it out at this point. Yeah that's fine, he deserves to have some fun, but the legacy he leaves behind looks like it'll be weak. Take the performing out and what does the music by itself do? He's very creative and has a lot of ideas but he just feels lost to me.

I wish him and Johnta Austin were still working together. He could’ve been that person for CB, not essentially to work together on every song but just as someone who gives him advice. Or Usher.

I think CB likes and likes to make a lot of different styles of music. But that leads to his albums kinda sounding more like playlists (at least indigo and hboafm) especially cause they’re 30-45 songs.

And I don’t think he has no vision. I think he has thousands of ideas about the direction he wants to go. The problem is that he never decides and sticks to one. He’s trying to go 5 different directions at the same time, then suddenly drops one idea out of nowhere to go for another one etc. Just look at the music videos for indigo. Undecided had that portal thing in the beginning. Back to love as well. But that lead nowhere. It was a cool idea but in the end completely pointless.

Hboafm could’ve been an amazing album. Great concept, great covert art, but full of filler songs that got nothing to do with heartbreak.

But yeah as you said he should take a couple years off, stop putting out features and just find something else to focus on creatively. He got his clothing brand, he paints/draws. I think that’d be perfect for him. And then at some point he’d figure out a direction, ideally with one producer or at least not too many.

What did yall stans think of this? I remember when they first played it at a club or party and we ended up having to wait ages before it finally came out.

I liked it but if I remember right I think they changed it a little bit and made it less RNBish and more EDMish. Or I might be bugging about that

Really good discussion yall got going on here.

As Chris being my second or 3rd fave of all time, I've resigned to the fact that though he is more than capable of making better more mature music, he prefers to just make fun music. He can do the smooth rnb stuff when he wants, and even that has his trademark twists and quirks added to it most of the time.

But I think he would rather make music for people at parties and kickbacks, and to be honest I dont blame him because that is what he is good at.

I do think if HBOAFM didnt have so much filler and stuck to the theme of heartbreak and maybe redemption throughout the whole thing, it could have been his 'Confessions' so to speak. Or maybe just a better album than it turned out to be, though it was still good.

Obviously he loves his craft and is dedicated to it. I mean he gives away probably the most free s*** I've ever seen from any artist which is awesome. But the sad truth is that he doesn't want to be tamed. I thought having his kids would maybe change that a little but he still continues to make party and trap, hiphop because like I said it's fun to him and hes good at it.

It would be nice to see him work with some of his older peers in the game and freshen up his production and absolutely his pen game. Maybe one day it will hit him and he'll consider it but right now he still just wants to have fun and stay in his comfort zone.

And I'm cool with it tbh

Don’t think he needs to work with anyone. He just needs to make what he wants and not try to appease his OHB friends

Be interesting to see him work with someone like Joe, or Charlie Wilson lol.

Those guys are irrelevant I know lmao so it would never happen. Would just be interesting to see how different it would sound. Be cool if he had Tank write him some stuff again I know they worked together a bunch already. Tank I think is one of the most underrated in the game to begin with imo.

But yea what do I know hes been doing his thing for years and he hit on a winning formula so hes doing just fine. Just been a fan so long thought it'd be interesting to hear a different more mature sound even if he only tried it once.
