idk what it is but for all the complaining comedians have been doing about cancel culture they have been all dropping some stale ass s*** across the board.
including Louis ck/chappelle/rock
Louie hasn’t really complained about any of that and he even argued that it’s good for comedy in certain ways. Also his last special was great and didn’t really bring any of that up at all. There is nothing fundamentally different about his content or approach to jokes in his new specials as his old ones.

Real, unfortunately

Louis has been on a noticeable decline since 2017 (the special)
Oh boy

It’s weird that people think it’s odd or hacky for some of the greatest stand up comedians of all time—who became successful making transgressive commentary on the culture of their time—to now make similar commentary on the current culture. Anytime someone says “it’s not about what they’re talking about, it’s just not funny” it’s borderline cope. Identify me a joke about this stuff that you found acceptable and funny. Just admit you think it shouldn’t be talked about at all other than unequivocal support. The current culture is like a mass form of second hand embarrassment—looking over your shoulder waiting to cringe. The only comedy anybody is on board with now is ironic alt material where the camera zooms in on some idiots face and they make some silly noise or overly personal stuff that’s basically just scolding the audience. I do agree that I’d rather they just make jokes—whether they’re “problematic” or not rather than be overly self aware of that fact. I think it’s why Louie’s last couple specials and Shane Gillis’s were so good.
I just want these niggas to be comedians and not yelling at me on stage.
Nothing is off limits in comedy
The caveat is that you gotta be funny
And boy s*** has not been funny
Louis has been on a noticeable decline since 2017 (the special)
That special was trash but everything after that has been better
Guy needed that cancellation

For me I feel like this was rehash of many chappelle topics and jokes bit less insightful

Completely disagree

Guy needed that cancellation
He even sort of admits that. He got too big.

I agree with this. Most of the funny s*** is on podcasts now.
i never thought marlon wayans was funny but on a whim i watched his new special last night and it was nearly exactly what i hoped chris’ special would be
a good companion piece, regardless of if you like chris’
This s*** was not funny bruh im tired of these old niggas doing standup specials about modern topics
Every comedian makes jokes about modern topics?
@willcherry I was thinking about your comments cause I read them before I watched (ironically I was at a Jeselnik show when this aired)
I agree with a lot of what you said, but tbh I think former Chris Rock specials are lended a lot to the editing. Even his earlier work he always seemed to be involved in that process, so I'm looking at this as an artist of him trying to forgo that level of polish to put something out like you would see it in person.
If Jay put out a live (new) album this many years in, I would expect something like MCHG live. An enjoyable Jay album but probably not anything that breaks the mold.
I still think he has that 4:44/former glory in him, but should I really feel expecting that 25+ years in? Idk. It would be amazing to see, but like he already for the most part has said what he needs to. So for him to even be this relevant still is a marvel.
I enjoy your music, and am a visual artist myself so I'm thinking if I fully articulated myself to maximum commercial and critical success for 25+ years, would I still have that perfectionist drive? It's easy to say yes on this end of it.
I don't mean that to detract from him, but its more like "i don't think this detracts from his legacy its more like these are his older years and a different period all together"
Of course there are comics like carlin and louie that seem to get sharper with age, but at the same time they had momentary success sporadically, Rock has been pretty relevant the whole time and I think it should count for something.
I'm not reading all that s*** good for you or sorry that happened
Need an artist to do a show with a producer where they freestyle a concept album then audience gets a copy

I’ve thought of this before but the album would either be mid or it would have to be a recurring thing or at least takes some hours lol
Mfs can’t make 6-10 decent songs in 3-4 hours unless it’s that Yeat Carti Uzi type s*** lol

Lol like only Lupe could do this

Lupe and Marc Ribillet live album
I genuinely feel like if they + thundercat as the middle ground friend got together, a classic album could be made in less than 24 hours

I think live comedy streamed on Netflix is kind of meaningless. Cause seeing it live they are actually more likely to remove jokes they would have done at a no phones show and none of it is improvised anyway they rehash their most recent sets. Like live implies to me they will some how react to audience , heckling or something that recently happened topic wise

Great point,
And you're right. At the same time I feel like a comedian on his level is above Crowd Work bc it feels like you're padding time. From what I've heard he had an hour pre slap then had to cut and remove to get that in there,
He's Chris Rock and he has the power for this over Netflix. It didn't NEED to be an hour. Him playing with the format more would have been a relatively easy - cool lift.
