Great point,
And you're right. At the same time I feel like a comedian on his level is above Crowd Work bc it feels like you're padding time. From what I've heard he had an hour pre slap then had to cut and remove to get that in there,
He's Chris Rock and he has the power for this over Netflix. It didn't NEED to be an hour. Him playing with the format more would have been a relatively easy - cool lift.
I agree crowd work isn't needed but nothing about this felt live. If you aren't adapting to audience in some way or adapting. The only reason this entire special was hyped up was because of Will Smith slap. Netflix could have announced this 2 weeks ago or a month early versus how early they announced and gotten same or better ratings.
i never thought marlon wayans was funny but on a whim i watched his new special last night and it was nearly exactly what i hoped chris’ special would be
a good companion piece, regardless of if you like chris’
it was ok
it got better towards the end it started off
Man 10 minutes into this and it’s whack as hell. Like damn nigga why you so mad

I wonder if anything happened that would’ve made him mad on a public stage

Nah I mean I get it I’m just saying like jeez I was hoping for so jokes but I guess based on the title it makes sense

Yeah to me like bruh I get woke and outrage can be funny but he sounded truly scorn by it. Again I get it but I was expecting more old type Chris Rock
Lol
Not good? Usually trust you on s***

I mean you may like it. Its definitely a watch for yourself situation. I wasn't going in super hyped. I was just going in to laugh. He covers many topics similar to recent Chappelle specials but where Chappelle presented a new perspective or ways to look at things. Chris Rock punchlines don't feel ever clever to me in this . Just very straightforward.
Worth a watch though

I usually rock with chapelle more, so I’ll go in not expecting too much. Thanks as always

Always love report back. I felt bad not laughing especially cause audience was howling then they would randomly zoom in on a celebrity
Love chris but I really didn't like this set. A lot of it just felt like middle age twitter takes.
just finished watching it. had some good moments, I laughed at most of his s***.
the only thing I don't like Chris doing is constantly repeating his lines. feel like he's done it a lot in the past too. otherwise, good show
@willcherry I was thinking about your comments cause I read them before I watched (ironically I was at a Jeselnik show when this aired)
I agree with a lot of what you said, but tbh I think former Chris Rock specials are lended a lot to the editing. Even his earlier work he always seemed to be involved in that process, so I'm looking at this as an artist of him trying to forgo that level of polish to put something out like you would see it in person.
If Jay put out a live (new) album this many years in, I would expect something like MCHG live. An enjoyable Jay album but probably not anything that breaks the mold.
I still think he has that 4:44/former glory in him, but should I really feel expecting that 25+ years in? Idk. It would be amazing to see, but like he already for the most part has said what he needs to. So for him to even be this relevant still is a marvel.
I enjoy your music, and am a visual artist myself so I'm thinking if I fully articulated myself to maximum commercial and critical success for 25+ years, would I still have that perfectionist drive? It's easy to say yes on this end of it.
I don't mean that to detract from him, but its more like "i don't think this detracts from his legacy its more like these are his older years and a different period all together"
Of course there are comics like carlin and louie that seem to get sharper with age, but at the same time they had momentary success sporadically, Rock has been pretty relevant the whole time and I think it should count for something.
i appreciate the compliment to my music fam, and you’re definitely spitting facts

in the Talking Funny thing he did he talked about how if the audience understands the premise then the joke becomes funny no matter what and that s*** worked when the writing was good, but now that he's spitting half ass jokes we see on twitter everyday the s*** sucks
