Haven’t seen him perform it at Sunday service but I would assume that’s the reason. Does he just perform the chorus and half the first verse?

Basically, you meet in a private space with the priest, go through some prayers/routine stuff first, then you confess your sins. It's on you to be as honest and thorough as you can. Once you're done, priest gives you your penance, which is a number of various prayers to pray (how many you get depends on the severity of your sins) after you leave.

Also, you have the option of doing your confession face to face or behind a screen (to make it easier/less awkward for you).
