I've only ever heard the people who were like 14 when Interstellar came out say that. I think most people who've seen Contact and 2001 and such recognize Inception as a more more idiosyncratic science fiction offering. Same goes for a biopic, a war movie, an adaptation of a classic. That doesn't match the vitality of his breakout hits. Not on paper, not on screen, not contextually.

And he wouldn't be the product of Batman hype. He revitalized the property. The last Batman movie before he started making them was a disaster. The superhero genre wasn't even ascendant yet.

Interstellar was absolutely adored when it first came out by audiences as well. It’s not just some Gen Z rediscovered movie or something. Maybe someone who had their mind blown by 2001 or Contact as a kid wouldn’t love Interstellar as much but for me, I love interstellar more than either film (and I saw 2001 before interstellar)

The reason I mention Batman hype is because the Nolan fanboyism started after TDK. Superhero fans are generally the biggest plebs in the world and so they over gassed the s*** out of him after that film. Inception was actually hated on a lot when it came out and was called “instruction manual cinema” and a Paprika rip off. Now I still really like the film but honestly it does suffer from being too literal. I think Tenet is the better film because Nolan became a lot more confident in being comfortable with audiences not getting it and didn’t care to hold their hands for that one.

Interstellar to Odyssey run is when Nolan proved he’s a GOAT without the Batman fanboys gassing him. And it’s when his name truly became the logo. I can get liking his earlier films but he was just a Michael Mann wannabe back then. No where as distinct and unique a filmmaker in his style as he is now.

Also a war film, classical adaptation, and biopic does actually prove Nolan isn’t just a sci fi gimmick merchant. And Tenet proves Nolan doesn’t gotta over explain like he did on Inception. And Interstellar proved Nolan does have a heart considering everyone called him an emotionally cold and over calculated filmmaker before that.
