Tenet was his first major studio blockbuster post-Twilight. He was cast in Tenet prior to his casting in Batman and lots of people clowned his casting in Batman because they didn't know any better.

Inception was a massive contribution to his filmography in the mainstream. Inception was a major role for him (which is/was larger in the mainstream zeitgeist than a lot of his work with Scorsese btw). It's not a coincidence that post-Titanic Leo looked for and took on roles with various auteurs.

I'm saying Nolan has a history of taking on actors trying to change their image. RDJ fits that bill too just in a different way.

Nolan loves casting people who are trying to shift their public image and loves putting them in roles that do that. Anne Hathaway and RDJ have spoke about it explicitly within like the last year. And he's done it a lot with male actors who started out as young heartthrobs.
