Probably based on a logical standard that all life starts at conception, hence deserves equal protection under law.

Real question for conservatives not trying to argue, just trying to understand what I have always seen as the biggest logical flaw in conservatism (or at least conservatism in actuality, not ideologically).

As GOP is the party that brands themselves as being fiscally conservative, and essentially every Republican voter I know (I'm from Ohio I know a ton) describes that as being one of their main concerns,, how do you reconcile that with the actual facts on government spending being dramatically increased essentially every time a Republican is in office and then reduced when a Democrat comes in office? (Who are labeled as the fiscally irresponsible party that always wants to spend taxpayer $)

Is it that you think the benefit of tax cuts is more important than gov spending? Or any other reason

Which dem presidents do you think cut spending?

And yes I think it's hard to justify voting republican when they jack up spending but that also depends on if you vote straight ticket. You could just use the same argument with liberals and dems when it comes to a few key issues as well. Maybe not as many because liberals in general favor larger government but the same thing happens on both sides. Just vote for the good ones and oppose the bad ones.

Shouldn't have said "government spending" shouldve said budget deficit dramatically increasing (and even though I realize the deficit is not actually that telling of economic conditions, it is a central GOP talking point any time a Dem is in office).

I don't have the statistics pulled up in front of me rn (im in class, im sure u can find extremely easily though), but I'm pretty sure it's the case that since Reagan with no exceptions, Dem presidents have reduced the deficit (admittedly there have only been 2, but if u actually look at each party's economic policies it makes complete sense and is predictable) while every Republican president has come back to power and run the deficit up big time.

Just doesnt make any sense to me that even though this seems to be a very clear pattern at this point, the GOP can still get away with selling itself as the fiscally responsible party (the only real "conservatism" in GOP spending comes through dramatically cutting spending on anything that helps the poor, but these cuts are always far outweighed by the massive breaks they give to the rich & elite + the insane defense spending)

I'd still say the same thing I said before. It's definitely hard but not really unique to the GOP. Politicians lie all the time and there are a lot of people who blindly vote straight ticket for any party and then blame the other side for all the problems.

Since reagan theres been two dem presidents: Obama and Clinton.

Clinton's budget was rejected like 3 times before it was approved because the gop was more fiscally restrained during the mid 90s. Idk why it happened. Clinton was forced to cut spending rather than pursue a more center left agenda.

Obama never actually cut the deficit. He definitely supported the bailout and stimulus package so he actually increased deficits. Then when the stimulus wasnt renewed deficit spending was higher under him than it was under Bush. I think Obama's lowest spending year (not including stimulus) was higher than bushs highest year.

    Dems recently dont do better

Yeah u definitely make a good point about it just being something politicians do in general. I just think this example is a bit extreme bc the GOP so adamantly pushes the idea of fiscal conservatism but then turns around and does the exact opposite (when I would say that with most issues politicians on either side will make adamantly push an idea but then simply do nothing about it once they have power, rather than actually actively doing the opposite)

And yeah just looked back & you're right about Obama I was misinformed. That being said, after taking over from Obama, Trump has followed the pattern of continuing to run it up even more and more (and if he serves 2 terms will have the largest spending of any president in history... in his defense though I could definitely see this just becoming a thing, every new president becoming the biggest spender ever)

I saw a study recently showing that over the last several decades the trend has been that the more control the Democrats have over Congress the bigger the deficit gets. The party of the president is really immaterial
