    Abolish the ivy league system

No like seriously it’s f***ing insane

These schools literally are a pipeline for the rich and powerful they do absolutely nothing for educating the general masses

Whatever research output they produce isn’t worth the social decay it causes.

? a lotta this needs elaboration. there are plenty of rich people's kids there, of course, but all those schools take on many middle and lower class students w/ financial aid

and what do u know about their research output such that you can weigh it against "social decay" that is caused?

(in quotes not because i'm doubting you, but because the phrase by itself defines little in real terms)

i dunno much bout this guy's works btw, but it appears he's held in high regard, at least judging by sm of the twitter replies n here itt

    but
my question bout his letter concerns the variety of disparaging topics he brings up. political w/ the palestine stuff, personal/emotional w/ the mother stuff -- would any of this stuff been his reason for quitting had he been granted tenure?

i'm not implying that if he were tenured he wouldn't still feel bothered by these things, however i do feel like he may be burying the lede a bit

lol you could say that about most ppl. we're all self driven and the majority will ignore injustice for a bag. he probably would still be there, maybe voicing concerns among his peers but nothing public like this bc he'd lose tenure

Look it up harvard doesn’t educate a sizeable amount of middle class or poor kids

Unless the kids of two doctors is your idea of middle class but that’s more upper middle class and scratching the limits of well off

    Again it’s negligible

As far as research output idk what yr asking. Ik they do research but my point is the cons aren’t worth it there are many great public schools globally and in the US that are elite for research

NYU, UCLA, UC Berkley, uni of toronto, mcgill, sciencepo paris etc all come to mind

    i agree w/ dis
i guess my thing is that it diminishes the effect of both actual criticisms if they're only uttered bc of money issues

like the things should be discussed regardless if they're true and meaningful to the critic. if what my question poses is tru about this guy then the criticisms feel more weaponized than genuinely critical

55% of our undergraduates receive need-based Harvard scholarships.
20% of Harvard parents have total incomes less than $65,000 and are not expected to contribute.
Families with incomes between $65,000 and $150,000 will contribute from 0-10% of their income

from harvard's site. who knows if it's all to the percentage point accurate, but the 20% <65k stat is enough to say that there's a "sizable amount" there

i'm asking what you know about harvard's research (or any of the elite schools') that would let you say that the cons (which need to be put in real terms) outweigh such

No keep the ivy league system. It's effective. Abolish the plantation mindset the Black American still carries today.
