I’m supposed to leave for study abroad in Japan in less than two weeks. I feel like if I’m still allowed to go at that point I have to because I’m never gonna get another chance, plus the situation seems like it’s gonna be a lot worse in the US than Japan at this point. Most people think I’m crazy for still wanting to go what y’all think?

If I had to choose between being in America or Japan during this thing I'd choose Japan. Simply for the fact that Japanese are already pretty hygienic by themselves and have always been wearing masks to protect others from their germs. They're also a collectivist culture so the importance of the group is what's considered priority in stead of the importance of the individual. So I'd assume people will follow government guidelines such as isolating themselves much better. Also the US has guns and I wouldn't wanna be anywhere near people with those in times like these.

The risky part is gonna be the flight to Japan where you share recycled air with all passengers. So chance of infection is higher if there's undetected infected people in the plane. Though even if you do get it chances are likely your symptoms will get better within a couple weeks, and you'd still have your once in a lifetime chance.

Or you could wait in America and hope the japan offer still stands due to a pandemic really being a situation that's out of your control. Decision is up to you.

Yeah you bring up a lot of good points, I feel like as a society the Japanese are way better suited for something like this than Americans.

The biggest thing I'm worried about is catching the virus at some point while I'm in Japan (or on the plane or even before I leave) and needing hospitalization there. I don't really speak Japanese at all and I feel like getting seriously ill in a foreign country would be pretty scary. On the other hand though it seems like US hospitals are gonna be a complete s*** show pretty soon so maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Waiting to see if I can go later is tough because this is technically my senior spring semester, so if I waited I'd be pushing back my graduation date pretty far which I'd prefer not to do.

Yea I get why you're hesitant. Its a difficult choice. Technically there's a chance you might need hospitalization, but as far as research shows now that chance is pretty low if you're not in an at risk group. Still, being hospitalized in a country where you don't speak the language is a valid concern.

I already know how this goes. Keep having to go to work until someone officially contracts the virus. Even though I have remote access and can literally do everything I need to do from home with my work laptop. For context I work for a company that has anywhere from 10k-20k people there every day smh

  • Mar 12, 2020

all the offices in my area are having ppl work from home on friday to see if it can work on a large scale

Yeah man I’m definitely blessed because I know people are about to going to start the effects of not being able to work soon. S*** just sucks man everything in the US is reactive rather than proactive so we’re going to sit around until it’s too f***ing late

It’s like that over in in Aus. The gov is pouring money into businesses instead of taking action to flatten the curve . People being forced to work or starve amidst a god damn pandemic not to forget this is to the back drop of a underfunded health system

    We’re f***ed
