Since New York wasn't enough of a spectacle, most people don't even think about it even happening, it's just numbers on a news story. They expected apocalypse, bodies overflowing into the streets, a Hollywood disaster flick.
Since that didn't happen, ergo there is no potential disaster and WOO SUMMER TIME, especially since the only direct effect for many of the healthy is economic.
Because it could be over, in their minds, it's over unless and until there's that proper disaster movie thing going on. Americans have literally been conditioned to not give a s*** about anything short of utter and total disaster because that's literally all they can think of as dangerous now.
Forest fire? Not until it's rolling over your town and cremating your bodies inside the metal oven that used to be your house or car.
Global Warming? Until Miami is gone and NYC is building infrastructure to keep the city from sinking it won't really matter.
Pandemic? I don't see people dropping dead on the sidewalk, it's just the flu bro!
