I'm no virologist but I do know with viruses there's antigenic shift and antigenic drift. And antigenic drift basically means small mutations, and antigenic shift means a mutation significant enough to make it a different strain. That's basically what happened with this coronavirus when it jumped from another species to humans.

With small mutations, at least for influenza, your immune system creates antibodies that will recognize similar variants of the strain. But with antigenic shift it's become a different strain, and you have no immunity against it even if you've been in contact with another strain of the virus before. I'm guessing if it's small mutations you won't get it twice. I'm definitely not an expert though, this is just what I remembered.

there is also the theory going around that there are two strains of the virus rn and that one is far deadlier than the other. some claims that the germans have gotten more of the weaker strain and italians might have gotten more of the stronger strain. it's speculation at this point tho we aint gon know s*** for sure until this is all over

I wouldn't be surprised with how widespread it is. Just by sheer number of infected people it'll occur more often.

also there is a selection process going on with every virus.

diseases tend to mutate to become less virulent as you get farther away from the index case. viruses that make their hosts very sick result in their hosts having less social contact, which means the viruses have fewer chances to get passed along to new hosts. natural selection then results in the dominant strains being ones that make their hosts highly contagious but only mildly incapacitated.

everyone outside of hubei got the virus from a host that was well enough to travel; everyone outside of china got it from a host that was well enough to travel internationally; everyone who got it outside of china recently got it from someone well enough to evade quarantine & detection measures. someone who got it from a seafood market, pot-luck dinner, or supermarket inside hubei could've encountered a host stumbling around and hacking up a lung. that imposes natural selection on the virus that likely makes the hubei strains more dangerous than international strains currently circulating.

Largest study to date, with a sample size of over 70,000 patients.

-81% of infections mild. 13.8% severe. 4.7% critical

-Highest fatality rate is for people over 80, at 14.8%

-Among existing conditions, heart disease is highest risk, followed by diabetes, then chronic respiratory disease, then high blood pressure

-Fatality increase with age. There are no deaths of children under 9. Death rate under 39 years is 0.2%. 40-49 years is 0.4%. 50-59 years is 1.3%. 60-69 years is 3.8%. 70-79 years is 8%.

-Men are more likely to die (2.8%) than women (1.7%)

    only have secondary sources:

    cnbc.com/2020/03/04/coronavirus-chinese-scientists-identify-two-types-covid-19.html

    there seems to be contradiction:

    abc.net.au/news/health/2020-03-06/coronavirus-two-strains-infection-study/12023822

pure speculation, as nearly everything about this virus (simply because it's so new)
