I think that’s fair. But it would also be fair if someone interpreted those things as racist dog whistles that went rewarded and became a stepping stone to claiming an identity as a “black Nazi.” So that’s why I don’t really find it a useful exercise to make out someone’s moral perspective based on whether they still listen to an artist’s art. Unless they’re championing the artist’s personal views then I can say yeah you’re a moron. Like if someone likes “Slide” from V2, I wouldn’t say well you don’t have a problem with Nazis it seems. It comes off disingenuous.

definitely, but that specific example is something that requires hindsight to see more clearly

this example is pretty tired, but i don’t think there’s a single person alive who claims to be a fan of Hitler’s art who doesn’t also identify as a nazi

Hitler is an extreme correlation. I don’t think putting Hitler the artist or person in the same bracket as Kanye is intellectually honest.

If you were to say David Bowie taking on the The Thin White Duke persona, doing Nazi salutes, and being quoted as “he would have been a great Hitler,” that makes more sense as a comp.

And in Bowie’s case, I’d still find his contributions to art very significant and worthwhile. I wouldn’t label folks who listen to Bowie as Nazi sympathizers blanketly. I also think it’s fair for people to decide they don’t want to listen to him anymore based on this. Perfectly within their right and reason.

I think for me it’s the assessment of the folks that still do being some sort of signal of Nazi support. That is silly to me.
