Yeah, it honestly seems like some of these users just try to come up with this whole "you're a suburban cac" or TroyAveStan tier "suburban nerds" narrative to downplay someone's credibility or make users look "weak/soft". I see what you’re trying to get at, but that’s a false parallel. We can’t let consumers off the hook. If an artist is projecting a certain lifestyle and beating the consumer over the head with it, and then one day goes on a homophobic rant, it is intellectually dishonest to say, “I’m willing to enjoy all this other stuff that stems from the same background that probably shapes his homophobia, but now he’s totally a bad person and he must be canceled because he actually brought it up even tho hip hop is the most raw form of music communication there is.” Like I said, I’m not justifying dababy, but I am s***ting on the average american’s sensibilities and how we are willing to be desensitized to so much while also demanding entertainers to magically have sensitivity in our specific regards. this isn't to justify the morality of what he said, but when people say "why are you surprised this guy made insensitive comments" they aren't saying "why are you surprised this dude hates gays" they're saying "why are you surprised this guy doesn't have metropolitan sensitivities "...it would be completely different if he said he hated gays and they'd burn in hell (if he said something like this, I missed it). people are trying to equate him making dumb comments to him being outright prejudice or discriminatory or something.
This is why the comments earlier in the thread about environment and upbringing/etc seem valid to me. because its not like theyre using it to excuse someone being hateful, theyre saying that being from a certain environment means you have different ideas about acceptability and what is/isnt okay to comment on or how to do so within an overton window. this doesn't make what he said "acceptable" but i genuinely don't understand the proportion this is being blown up to. like if he said genuinely targeted and hateful comments i would maybe, but i feels like people want to argue about what they think dababy thinks of gay people in theory because of the feelings of people defending him like Boosie or TI rather than the few words the guy actually said
