A lot of the stuff I wanted was unavailable.. that’s sad, but I did get Black Girl, The Koker Trilogy, and La Jetée+Sans Soleil. Haven’t seen any of the movies tho
Haven't seen Black Girl yet, but other than that I know you managed to snag 5 masterpieces so you did good

I'm super weary on buying blu rays and criterions I have never seen. There have been many times I have watched the criterion film and did not like it.

Edit: I bought The Ox-Bow Incident, Miracle Mile, and Bend of the River

Like what? I think American Hustle (lol) is the only impulse blu ray buy I’ve disliked. It Follows, Dekalog, Criterion’s BBS collection, The Raid 1+2, Leviathan (recent Russian, I feel like there are maybe some other popular films w this title) - tbh I have a very good history w blind purchases, but maybe that’s also bc the films all generally have great reception already. I don’t really like most of the films I’ve seen from Criterion’s Godzilla collection, but the cultural value+packaging makes up for that

For me, even if the director is good or it has great reception, it can be hit or miss. That is why I held back buying petit soldat by Godard because I haven't seen it and if I don't like it, I probably won't be watching it again

Saw Miracle Mile a few months ago for the first time... soo damn good! Ox Bow is definitely a top 5 western for me. The blind justice shot blows me away every time

That film is good, but Criterion's barebones release of it isn't

Good thinking for Godard because I ended up disliking the 2 films I thought would be my favorite ones. smh

i dont know, doesnt look that interesting to me :(
Anyone else not f***ing with Godard? He‘s pseudo-intellectual af
sort of, i admire his work from Breathless to Band of Outsiders and to Pierrot Le Fou. Then some of his films the earliest when he got political was Le Petit Soldat because of the Algerian Independence. So, he made films during and responding to the times. Including most of his late-60's works was by the 1968 Paris Uprising by socialists and the so-called like you said, pseudo-intellectuals, "Situationist International" and he succumbed by their politics. Even though, he challenged the rules of filmmaking since then in which it changed cinema since then.

totally know what you mean.. the film essays can be challenging but sometimes it just hits try Vivre Sa Vie or Pierrot Le Fou if you havent yet
Contemplating blind buying the Spike Lee films in the Kino sale. I’m trying to resist blind buying but I love all the Lee films I’ve seen so far, so I‘be considered blind buying Crooklyn, Clockers, Jungle Fever and Mo Better Blues but I’m not sure yet.
we had such a great time with Pink Flamingos the other day that i immediately copped the 2 other Divine crits John Waters has; Multiple Maniacs and Female Trouble also needed to finally revisit His Girl Friday so i got that too
just threw down for the Sopranos blu box on the weekend so i took it easy on this sale
Polyester is a great time also if you haven’t seen that one. The scratch and sniff card in the Criterion release was a f***ing trip and the smells still haunt me to this day.

After I read the Clockers book I decided to check a couple of scenes from the movie out and ngl it looked awful (was an awful transfer though, so grain of salt and all that)

He also seems kind of too rough and masculine, I expected him to be a little more subtle being French... but he seems to lack that completely
I hate that directors like him seem to thrive off of the disharmony between their characters, I don‘t like that

His movies look extremely pretty but never been too in love with one. Liked Vivre Sa Vie & Breathless a lot though.
