Anyone else not f***ing with Godard? He‘s pseudo-intellectual af

I went through a Godard phase and then eventually got over it and realized that him (and some of the French New Wave in genera) can be too superficial and detached. I loved Contempt but haven’t seen it in a few years. I still f*** with Breathless, Band of Outsiders, Vivre sa Vie and Pierrot le Fou though. Weekend was half interesting / half obnoxious though.

But when it comes to French Cinema of that time, id take Resnais and Demy were so much more interesting than Godard and Truffaut.

Detached is the perfect word. Vivre sa vie is the best I’ve seen so far and weekend was so so so bad I wanted to turn it off but forced myself to finish

Long Day’s Journey Into Night on CC, that 1 hour tracking shot in 3D was insane. The movie had a very clever marketing idea if anyone is interested.

I didnt even realize that was one take until i read about it. Wild

I’ve always rated him as more of a film makers film maker because outside of the classics (Breathless, Vivre Sa Vie) his films just really seemed set up to show how cool and philosophical he is lol. But the method in which he made and shot the movies seemed to have inspired a lot of the greats that followed

I only ordered Bottle Rocket so it was essentially a cardboard envelope. I guess that’s what I get for only buying one thing

I’ll be sending it back tho

They did the cardboard envelope for me too and I had just ordered the Three Fantastic Journeys boxset, Holiday and Paris is Burning and they were all smushed I’m so my boxset was damaged. S***s ridiculous

This Godard disrespect, I admit I don’t necessarily ‘understand’ his films, but I hardly understand the full meaning of many favorite films. It’s less about understanding than experience w film (and all art imo) and I don’t think the political nature necessarily changes that expectation. It’s all just experimenting w film language and maybe he doesn’t necessarily succeed in delivering clear knowledge production, it’s still a very unique n fun experience w any of his films in my experience

Great ass film. Bleak as f*** but still darkly comedic. Was it your first Bergman?
