@NISMO thoughts on older bmw 3 series (2002/2003/2004)? They seem so affordable but probably a pain in the ass with gass & maintenance?

yeah that's my take on it. I hear the ones that aren't turbocharged are a lot more reliable but it's still oil leak city and since they're known to be fun to drive they get beat on a lot

the difference though is BMWs are gonna be cheaper to maintain overall since you're in Europe

2002-2004 is the E46 chassis and does not have turbocharged petrol engines. The diesels do, but I'm pretty sure they weren't offered in the US.
The M54 used in the 325/330 are very good engines and fairly reliable, if they've been neglected by the previous owner, then a big haul on everything should be done to prevent bigger problems happening out of nowhere. The coolant system can become a problem, but replacing everything (thermostat, radiator, water pump) is a fairly easy job and easily accessible. Some electric problems can arise, but it's a 20 year old car and those happen. This also means a lot of spare parts in junkyards and so on. Also BMW has a lot of know how and DIY guides.
