2002-2004 is the E46 chassis and does not have turbocharged petrol engines. The diesels do, but I'm pretty sure they weren't offered in the US.
The M54 used in the 325/330 are very good engines and fairly reliable, if they've been neglected by the previous owner, then a big haul on everything should be done to prevent bigger problems happening out of nowhere. The coolant system can become a problem, but replacing everything (thermostat, radiator, water pump) is a fairly easy job and easily accessible. Some electric problems can arise, but it's a 20 year old car and those happen. This also means a lot of spare parts in junkyards and so on. Also BMW has a lot of know how and DIY guides.

Ah you're from Europe. To be fair I'd get a 6-cylinder model. The 4-cylinder engines had problems with the timing chain and they just don't give out that authentic BMW driving feeling. The 4 cylinder ones are not that much more efficient than the 6 cylinder ones too.
