feel like mr. morale has made me appreciate damn sonically a lot more.
in retrospect s***s a 9/10. some misses but duckwrth the perfect transition to kendrick's more personal, vulnerable storytelling on mr. morale
After whatever the f*** Morales was, I really appreciate how much fun DAMN is to listen to. And the cultural impact.
Kendrick’s peak. He will never reach that level again
That’s how peaks work lol. If you get there again it isn’t a peak.
The biggest lie that will ever be told in hip hop history is TPAB is better than this. TPAB might just be the biggest lie ever told in hip hop history in general lol
Kendrick’s peak. He will never reach that level again
Commercially yeah that’s how peaks work
Musically he’s gotten better
I always viewed DAMN. as Kendrick being mad at the world because he genuinely thought TPAB would have more of a impact socially than it did, and the whole thing with the blind lady was his life flashing before his eyes and kinda evaluating how he dealt with all these things. And also his struggles with his belief and faith, he seems to question his view point on God a lot on the album.
DNA and YAH he really goes in about his frustration with how media misrepresents the message of his music
Then YAH and ELEMENT especially third verse he expresses the feeling of how he’s not seeing the point in living righteous like when on YAH he says “we’ve all been cursed i know he walks the earth but theres money to get, b****es to get” like he knows theres a bigger picture preached to him but he doesn’t see the point in following it when he could just live in lust same with “damned if i do if i dont, god damn us all if he want” its just a pessimistic outlook thats causing him this depression
Then FEEL. is fully lashing out at the world feeling like hes the victim of the world ways, but PRIDE. is the opposite him really looking at things he does wrong himself for example “sometimes i point the finger just to make a point nowadays” exactly what he was doing on FEEL.
HUMBLE. i always liked how humility is a very important part of his belief system but the song humble is the least humble song on the album
XXX. tackles contradictions, with him talking about how he would kill someone for killing his son and bragging about all the things he would do with the gun then preaching about gun control
FEAR. is the most straight forward one, about fear and how its always played a major factor in his life from a black kid scared of his mom, to a black teen scared of the police and people causing him harm, to a black successful recording artist scared of the industry taking advantage of him
GOD. i always viewed as him coming to peace with his relationship with religion and who he is as a person before “dying”
And becoming sorta all knowing and being able to see all realities on DUCKWORTH.
So a lot of it just follows his struggle with religion and him questioning things, rather than trying to give an answer. I kinda rushed typed this but thats the basic idea i had off the top of my head
GOD.'s existence and the annoying ass intro and outro to DUCKWORTH. make this untrue imo
