“Crime of passion” basically just means you reacted in the moment to your emotions and that’s what causes you to commit the crime. It has nothing to do with getting off for the crime, but the actual charge for the crime.
Premeditated carries a harsher penalty than spur of the moment ie a crime of passion

If I get upset at my mom and punch her and she dies, that doesn't excuse my behavior, but that is not the same as 1st degree murder, which is different
I think there's a chance he admits to killing her on the condition of it being a crime of passion, which might allow him to see daylight at some point

If he invited her over, without the intent to kill her, and there's no evidence to suggest that he ever wanted to kill her (I actually think there probably is)
then that could constitute a crime of passion. Words exchanged and he snaps is not the same as premeditated.
