I think u are correct even tho Suga Free was doing off beat rapping first

But Lil B’s way of doing it is less..... eccentric? And in that case more accessible?

Deadpan cadence would refer to people like baby smoove who rap emotionlessly

Atypical flow is the offbeat flow op is referring to, but yeah I guess a deadpan “cadence” doesn’t make sense

those are 2 different things though.

And if that's the case, that's just Guru lol.

I just edited, yeah a cadence is more like rhythm right and deadpan means emotionless.

So an emotionless rhythm don’t make sense but we get what op meant

cadence also means vocal inflection dont it

so a deadpan cadence would make sense, or is that first definition of cadence not applicable when it comes to music

I still to this day don’t know what offbeat rapping is. I’ve heard all kinds of interesting pockets from Jay, MF DOOM, E-40 where they rap behind the beat and not in the traditional for measures (rhyming precisely on the snare.) Guru did this as well. Is that not offbeat? There was also that flow rappers used in the 90s where they sped up and slowed down throughout the bar. I lack the musical language to explain it but if you’ve listened to any 90s West Coast stuff you’ve heard it

Bizarre from D12 and Masta Killa may have been pioneers of the deadpan delivery as well. Erick Sermon also comes to mind. I’m listening to You Gots to Chill rn, it sounds like he’s not even trying
