What 👎
that s*** never hit on time, it was always a version with a DJ.
2dopeboyz would have the NO DJ version hours later
It was more like a sport
Practice rapping by remixing other ppl's songs until you get so good that ppl start paying attention to you, then you're tested at making your own s***.
Worked for J.Cole and Kendrick, many others to a lesser extent.
I think this is important too. How many artists got their start or even interest in music by freestyling over beats from songs they liked? It left for a lot of room to get your own ideas out into the world or even practice and progress musically.
My idea is to let artists upload non-profit songs to streaming. Like they'd be in Spotify, but no one would get paid for them.
the sample thing is def a real concern to me. have def noticed a few artists i like use what seem to me to be less adventurous beats and i wonder if it's to do with ppl avoiding stuff that isn't likely to get caught up in clearance hell
imagine if this was still mixtape era and carti dropped a whole proper mixtape of leaks and kid cudi officially
Good take.
Ima miss it.
Music discovery more of a niche tool than ever.
Gets tiring when playlist people are always asking “to be put on”
Like bro cant u just do what im doing
What if streaming services had a mixtape add-on that allows everyone to upload music for free without being able to make money off the uploaded music

optimistic idea but streaming services only care about one thing

I thought about this b4 lol. They won't
Great points OP; I still remember being on datpiff and the OG ktt in highschool finding new artists all the time. I think its just that streaming has the game f***ed up, there's damn near no distinction between an album or mixtape. How many times has a artist released they "debut album" only for it to not do the numbers that they wanted and now they coming back 6 months later with another "debut album"? lmao
optimistic idea but streaming services only care about one thing
If only 1 service did this, they would get a lot more member imo
I’ve never really f***ed Witt freestyles over other people’s beats tbh, the sample thing on new tracks is a pain in the ass, but there has been so much good music this year that I don’t think it’s a massive issue. 2020 one of the best years for rap music since the 90’s
if this wasn’t an opinion,it’d be a lie

What? The good year for music?

2020 cool but to compare it to the 90s is a far stretch imo. Rap artist today are the exact opposite of interesting. Yea they can rap but that’s it,a lot of rappers have no artistic integrity whatsoever to back up their raps.
Damn. People who are actually really great at rapping don't blow up like that anymore bc mixtapes aren't really a thing anymore
And niggas say this generation has the most creative freedom smh. Labels grabbed music and artist by the balls with streaming.

I didn't compare it to the 90's I said its one of the best years since. and as far as "mainstream" goes you're right. but look at descendants of cain, alfredo, pray for paris, the price of tea in china, kings disease, miles etc. all absolute top tier releases and the years still not up. my top 10 this year hold up to pretty much any year in the 00's and 10's
