This is the folly of liberalism. It doesn't matter what the slogan is; it will never be good enough. Liberals are too inundated with the optics of saying "defund the police".
Every damn person who hears the words "defund the police" knows what it means. You know what it means. I know what it means. The most rural of Americans knows what it means. The reason why the moderate backs away is because it's too radical in their limited framework.
This is the same argument utilized against the abolition of slavery. Lincoln did not want to say the words "emancipation" and "abolition" because he was afraid it would cause a divide between white moderates in the North and border states-- guess what, it happened anyway, and he eventually succumbed to pushing for a full abolition of slavery regardless. You don't even have to look this far back-- this always happens.
You educate and push that the working class (including a good chunk of the middle class, and regardless of race) are fundamentally opponents of the police. You don't turn away the slogan, you light a fire under the asses of those who oppose it. Cover social media, move on the ground-- emphasize the community, and juxtapose it against the elites (that the police protect). Grassroots mobilization is the future of the left-- the DNC is a complete and utter failure.
How is what I said a free for all man? It’s a trialled measure in restorative justice. Well trained. Unarmed too
Wouldn't work. As long as people have guns, their gonna commit crimes. At time has gone on people have less and less morals.
Because white people in the sue burbs we need to win elections don’t like it
You don't like the word "defund" because scared white people elsewhere don't like it?

I care about winning elections so we can make real reforms

Nope not true
I guarantee you if you ask rural voters what defund the police means, they’ll think it’s no longer funding the police/abolishing the police
I care about winning elections so we can make real reforms
I care about sending the clearest message possible for everyone, because no matter what that slogan becomes, those white people will not care to change.
“We’ve given you blackies enough! Now, stop scaring white people!” - OP
Shut up you’re a f***ing idiot
If you want a Revolution just say it
I care about winning elections so we can make real reforms
You're trying to win elections with the Washington Generals
Any meaningful change will come outside the two party system
Wouldn't work. As long as people have guns, their gonna commit crimes. At time has gone on people have less and less morals.
You need to understand violence. Have a look at the research conducted by Cure Violence NYC on the science of violent behaviour. You speak too anecdotally - on a small scale

I've had run ins with violence, yeah I'm not for this

I WANT THE UNITED STATES TO CEASE STATE-SPONSORED GENOCIDE AGAINST BLACK PEOPLE. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR CAUCASIAN FEELINGS OR HOW MUCH “defund the police” SCARES YOUR RACIST GRANDPARENTS.
which dem ran on that slogan though? how many?
I've already asked. OP didn't have an answer
You and a lot of people itt have been talking this way, and its leaving me confused. Don't you want these changes to actually happen, though? And don't you realize that change only comes in this country with mass appeal and votes?
5% of the population can scream something at the top of their lungs for years, but unless they're able to translate it to be digestable and appealing to the mass..nothing will happen.
You can't go from 0-100 in matters like this. It sounds great..but it won't happen. Too many reactionary and close-minded people out there will never give you a chance.
As a progressive I'd love to see the system rewritten from the ground up..but you can't tell the casual and comfortable American that from the get-go or they'll dismiss you immediately.
Surely as a progressive you'd realise 'digestable and appealing to the comfortable masses' is always code for no fundamental change.
I've had run ins with violence, yeah I'm not for this
That’s fair. I practice Law and from what I see, policing is a callous institution. And a more healthy political culture is advocating for communities to learn the tools to engage with each other about problems and disputes, so they don’t have to consider what to do after anti-social behaviors are exhibited in the first place. I’m searching for a less violent world, and I’m hopeful

That's fair enough, you're at least part of the next generation to move it forward though. Changes slowly overtime.
In matter of fact, the only slogan that is better than “Defund the Police” is “No More White Police Officers”

no it isn’t. it’s the folly of thinking a word that already has a definition can instantly take upon a different and not even similar definition when used in the context of two other not-illuminating words, without explanation
the issue isn’t about appealing to
certain people bc certain people are likely to be offended. the issue is that the wording confuses people who don’t already have an idea of what the slogan is supposed to stand for
In matter of fact, the only slogan that is better than “Defund the Police” is “No More White Police Officers”
Yeah but to act like police corruption would end with all white police being eradicated is a silly thought. The entire system is corrupt. It needs to be completely destroyed, period.
Police brutality could still continue with asian and Latino cops and they would get off with a slap on the wrist because the corrupt system covers for just about any cop.
this thread is just nutty
imagine if “defund planned parenthood” actually meant something like “reduce their funding and create new institutions using what would’ve been planned’s budget for addressing the wellbeing of potential-mothers who are considering an abortion and providing them with mental health resources, as well as economic opportunities and the like, all on top of already existing abortion/birth control clinics”
most ppl are gonna have a vitriolic response to the slogan, and i’d imagine fewer would be as opposed to the second if such were even on the table
