I'm in the market for a new laptop and i've basically decided between these two. For context i've been using a 2012 MBA and it's been great but i'm kind of tired of Apple and want to try something new.

That new XPS be looking kinda hot too.

The XPS is going to cost me 1700$ CAD with an i5, 8GB RAM and 25GB Storage

MBA is 1500$ CAD as well but with 16GB of RAM.

What do y'all think? Anyone owned an XPS before? Are Windows laptops still ass? I want something that'll last me 5 years.

may i also recommend the windows surface laptop 3?
all 3 of those are good

I did briefly consider it. Went with the MBA though.

I'm still interested in a Windows laptop and might still try it out once the price drops.

Honestly it's a case of which one your more comfortable with in terms of OS.

I personally would go with the XPS 13 since I don't see the point of a Macbook unless your getting a Pro imo even though the new Airs actually look decent for once.

i3 with 8GB of ram is 1300$ (using my brothers student discount)

    i5 with 16gb of ram is 1700$

    I'd go i5 / 16GB / 512GB+ MBA for your use case

Nobody beats Macs in longevity and hardware quality, and I personally prefer macOS far above Windows but you can Boot Camp it if you want

Oh just read the rest of the posts. I definitely would've gone with 16GB of RAM for longevity's sake bc it's not upgradeable. Those macOS upgrades gonna choke a lot quicker with 8GB of RAM vs 16GB and it's a relatively inexpensive upgrade for doubling the RAM

Thought about the 16gb but my 2012 MBA had only 4gbs of ram and it's still going strong running Catalina. I don't think I'll have any issues with the base model.

Just me looking to 'futureproof' the large investment as easily as possible. All that matters is you're happy and it's a great machine regardless!
