someone pointed out this is a blessing in disguise bc this would've bombed if it came out in the next 6 months and now it has a better chance of doing well enough when it drops to have the planned sequel greenlit

It’s easy to say that “it’s a blessing that it didn’t come out this year because it would have bombed” but I really don’t think people are seeing the forest through the trees here.

Just what is the cinema business gonna look like a year from now? And how many are still gonna be there when Dune finally arrives?

They were hoping Tenet would be the shot in the arm they needed but it wasn’t (at least, in America it wasn’t). Now they’ve lost all major Xmas time movie releases.

This is basically the minutes leading up to the iceberg that the Titanic hit. Streaming services are gonna be loving it. But the cinema industry may never recover.

feel like this largely falls on new york not opening up its theaters, if they had opened in time for tenet it would’ve done substantially better making other studios rethink pushing their films back to next year buuut that might’ve made things worse covid wise

It’s more then just one city in one country. And it’s more then just one movie. It would be like saying PS3 and Xbox One would have been profitable alone off the base of GTAV’s immense success.

That massive chain in the UK and the US just shut their doors. More will likely follow.

Here in Australia, the vast majority of cinemas have reopened yet most of them are showing old movies and half baked films that studios are willing to throw away at this point. The only major release since the world stopped was Tenet. And the seating has been limited to support social distancing. While we’re looking like we’re almost back to normal, the cinemas are spending money to stay open and have movie showings for movies that f*** all people are coming to watch. And that’s going to continue for a long time with America being the third world country that conservatives always wanted it to be.

This is an industry that has already been on the back foot the last decade with piracy and streaming services taking hold. And now COVID has hit it with the Tyson Fury uppercut. Next year is gonna be dire for everyone involved in the movie industry not called Disney, Netflix or Amazon.

I knew this was going to happen. I’m still disappointed. Every Christmas my friends and I see a movie and do a gift exchange. This will be the first year ever we won’t be able to see a movie. I hope seeing movies in theaters will take up most of my schedule. I miss them so much.

That "Tenet is gonna be the movie to save theaters" narrative that Nolan stans tried to run with was so dumb.

This is becoming more true as time passes. I also was excited to see how it would play out, but looking back it’s pretty greedy and a bad look for Nolan/WB to put that out and try get people into theatres in the middle of what was happening.

I know Nolan was probably so against straight to streaming, but idk why he was against a delay. It was just kinda weird and obviously a failure

Almost finished w the book. Good story but fremen p**** sound woat all dry and s***.

don’t see how they’ll capture the bene genesseret abilities or Paul’s prescience on film, but I’m curious what villeneuve can do with it.

I love that he did it anyway. I would've been so pissed if I didn't get to see Tenet in theaters this year. The release was an experiment anyway to try to see if audiences would go to the theaters and obviously it didn't work out in the USA. I don't really think thats on Nolan/WB but rather our current administration for doing a terrible job with covid that the cases kept spiking leading up to the release.
