"Stolen" is pretty harsh, and even if it was inspired, it isn't enough to act like infringement was at play. If anything it's like a For Free interpolating Too Short situation; chalk it up to a homage if you will
But it is the same exact melody with the same melodic contour (pitch direction) and the same rhythm:
I-I-VII-I-II-V-VII
Calling it a rip off is too much tho nonetheless- just an example of great musicians being inspired by other music 👍
- BRAVEI already addressed in another post why I used the word "rip-off".
You might be right in the points you raise.
Well, it reminds me of the Picasso saying: "good artist copy, great artists steal"
No, and even if they did, they expanded on it enough for it to be an original take.
Like he did with Portishead’s “Machine Gun” sample in Belong To The World? Where Abel initially wrote to the band asking for permission to sample, they refused, and Abel still went ahead and used the sample?
Below some tweets from Geoff Barrow, a founding member of the band, also one of the songwriters of the track Abel was asking for permission to sample
Then Abel on his first ever interview with Complex would cover his ass:
(INTERVIEWER:) I heard Portishead drums on “Belong to the World.”
(Abel) Yeah, that was the inspiration behind that. I wrote a letter to the producers of Portishead and let them know this album is inspired by them.
;
Then some time later claiming there was no similarity, and no sampling
I’m not joking. Keep that weird s*** out of this section.
Mob Ties by Drake has the same melody as a Nas song and it's not even a sample. S*** isn't stealing sometimes producers just consciously remake a familiar melody

A few points:
1) Barrow is a consummate arsehole.
2) They technically didn't "steal the sample", they just recreated it. Two very different things, legally.
3) This entire episode was hilarious.
Is this a Jojo reference?
yes. Blinding Lights is a JoJo reference

No, that’s not what happened. The Weeknd and his producers clearly heard the 3 seconds from 0:20 to 0:23 of “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders OST - Setting Off” and decided to steal it without paying homage to the anime!
